What It’s Like Being A College Student In The 21st Century

Life is hard, but it's harder when you're in college.

I think we’re all on the same page when it comes to being asked about “how school’s going?” no matter what age we are. This question, of many others asked by adults, is most frequently asked to students in college. Well, for all those adults that wanna know how school’s going, it sucks. I mean that in the nicest way possible, but it’s pretty true. Here’s a few reasons why it blows.

First of all, classes are hard and I mean really hard. Isn’t it a little much that we have an essay due pretty much every class and we have four to six classes to worry about? I mean I know I sound like a baby, but I’m drowning over here. I haven’t seen the light of day in what seems like three months and schools only been in session for a few weeks now. The workload is severe. I’m talking crying-myself-to-sleep-nightly severe. Ok, maybe I’m being dramatic but school is hard.

Secondly, life is hard, too. This whole generation is very selfish (not that that’s a bad thing), but it’s hard to find people you can trust out here. I lucked out and found some good friends, but I feel for you if you’re struggling at school to find a good group of people that have your back. It’s survival of the fittest out here and it’s not like you can come home to your family at night and cry about it to them. Some people are not nice so watch out for yourself and don’t forget that sometimes hanging out with yourself is cooler than hanging out with a**holes. All I’m saying.

Lastly, growing up is really, really hard sometimes. How am I supposed to make my own doctor’s appointments or talk to real people on the phone about my cable issues? Where’s mom when I need her? How do I know what crosses the line as dark when I’m splitting my loads of laundry? Life is so hard and it gets a lot harder when you have to grow up. It’s just rough sometimes having to figure out how to do stuff on your own and, most importantly, how to get through stuff on your own.

I know this article has basically been me complaining about being a college student in this day and age, but I honestly wouldn’t trade this part of my life for any other part. I’m learning so much about myself and about people just being in this environment. Also, having a major I’m passionate about really helps with schoolwork and wanting to learn more. I don’t really mind writing an essay every class, as long as it’s something I’m passionate about. As college students in this day and age, it can be a tough go, but at the end of the day these are the best years of our lives. We’re livin’ it up don’t you worry.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
