Every now and then, something a celebrity does will blow up social media to the point of nausea. You'll inevitably hear someone say, "Miley Cyrus is being raunchy at a concert again!" or "Shia LaBeouf put out another weird video that's going viral." You might be one of those people who will say, "Who cares?" or, "They don't deserve to be famous!" As for me, I'm just wondering what's a publicity stunt and what's real.
Remember that time Jennifer Lawrence fell at the Oscars and nobody could shut up about it? Maybe she didn't care that she fell or maybe she was super embarrassed, but either way, she was trending and it made her a bigger deal than she already was. Some people will say it was purely accidental and the reaction was just a coincidence, but others will say her PR people told her to do it. I'm split in the middle because one part of me thinks it's absolutely ridiculous that Jennifer Lawrence fell on purpose given how long her dress was and the nerves of Oscar night, but at the same time I picture myself in her PR team's shoes and I could imagine myself looking for a way for my client to get attention.
When I look at the attention Britney Spears got when she shaved her head, I become even more confused. Back then, Spears clearly looked like she was not in her right mind, so I lean more towards the idea that she was actually going through something rather than looking for attention, but at the same time, you have to wonder how black and white everything is. In a messed up way, her problems could have been a PR stunt; it's just a matter of whether or not you believe her PR team created the drama or if they just capitalized on what was really going on with her by making her perform when she wasn't in the right state of mind.
Even Justin Bieber's actions are questionable. When Bieber egged someone's house was he just being a shitty young adult going through problems, or was he nudged by his PR team? Even if bad publicity is bad, publicity is still publicity and as long as it's making a celebrity look relevant and making them rich, it probably doesn't matter.
I guess it depends on how you look at things. If you're perceptive enough and know a little bit about the PR world to make the claim that Jennifer Lawrence's fall was a stunt then you might be right, but if you look at the crazy antics Britney Spears did in 2007 and claim it was real and that she was going through problems you might also be right. Whether you firmly believe some of these incidents were stunts or not, I think people shouldn't be naive enough to think that everything that happens in the celebrity world is real, nor should they believe that everything is a stunt. Some of the things that celebrities do are definitely things they were told to do, but there are some things that they did that they that they weren't. We might not know what is and isn't real, and that will always be a little annoying, but I guess that's part of the fun people have when they talk about these stories.
