What Incoming Freshmen Girls Should Know About Packing For College

Moving into college is very stressful. First you have to get this, then that and so on. The lists are endless. Newcomers going to college practically have to buy items ranging from bedding to school supplies to room essentials. For boys they pack some clothes, buy some posters for the room and boom! They are done (so I have heard about boys packing for college). For girls, they have difficulty packing for college. I was in that boat two years ago when I was a incoming freshman. Here is a list of things that I pack for college that might help incoming freshmen girls get an idea about how big the dorm room is and how much they should pack.

1. Your wardrobe is not going to fit your whole wardrobe

So this is what a college wardrobe may look like; it may be smaller, but you get the gist. If you end up in a forced triple, it may be half the size of the picture above.

2. Do not pack your whole wardrobe.

Stop. Do not even think about packing your whole wardrobe from your big closet at home. There is no room for every article of clothing you own. Also, more bags to move into your dorm room.

3. You don't need all your jewelry at school

Just bring a few pieces of jewelry that you think will match all the clothes you bring with you.

4. Do not bring all your shoes

You don't need all your shoes. I switch shoes out each season because I only live an hour away from the college I go to.

5. Get a basket to hold all your shoes

I use a shoe basket and I love it. It fits in a corner in my wardrobe.

6. Pick clothes to layer and match

Mix and match clothes because that means there is more room in your wardrobe for other clothes you may want at school. I practically packed everything in my bag when I moved in, and I didn't make that same mistake twice the following year

7. This is a dorm room; not an apartment or your house.

Your are most likely going to end up in a room this big. So just be aware that this space is not so big.

8. If you're in a suite get a plastic three draw set.

This was seriously the best purchase I made for school. I have been in a suite since freshmen year, and I like how I can just leave my toiletries, and that makes more room in my room for other things.

9. Get an ottoman

An ottoman allows me to get into my bed at school (the beds are very high) and allows me to have more storage space because it opens up and you can keep items in there.

10. Bring an over night bag

Don't you want to go visit friends at other colleges on some weekends?

11. Bring a pair of slippers

Bring a pair of slippers to travel down hallways or to do your laundry. Easy to slip on and easy to slip off.

12. Get a mini ironing board

If you iron and clothes need ironing attention make the investment and buy a mini ironing board.

13. Don't forget to pack a few cute pieces of clothes for parties

I mean some girls want those cute party pics wearing cute clothes.

14. Most importantly have fun

After packing and unpacking, right in front of you is the best four years of your life. Enjoy the ride because these are the best four years of your life no matter what you pack and don't pack.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
