From the time that I first stepped foot onto campus to the time that I left it, college has been a learning experience. Throughout my first year of college, I have learned much more than the function of the mitochondria. College has taught me very valuable life lessons that I did not gain in high school.
1. Time management
Not only is this the most important one on the list, but it is the one that can make or break you. A daily planner is a must when taking on 15 plus credit hours a week and juggling other campus activities as well. College is way more fun when you have activities planned out, but you have to remember the main reason that you are there.
2. Do not skip classes
The absolute worst thing you can do for yourself and for your grade is to skip classes. Whether it is a 7 a.m. lecture or a 2 p.m. composition class, you will be happy that you got out of bed for an hour to attend.
3. Eat regular meals
Keeping a regular eating schedule can be super difficult when you are up until two in the morning writing a paper that is due in six hours. Making a frozen pizza seems like it will help you stay away long enough for you to write a conclusion, but in all reality, it will not help. Staying away from those tempting snacks was one of the hardest tasks, especially when it was free food.
4. Go to bed at a decent time
When you live in a dorm with all your best friends, it can be extremely difficult to want to go to bed at a decent time. Although it is important to make lasting relationships with people, it is also important to get plenty of sleep to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I promise you, your friends will still be there when you wake up.
5. Talk to your professors
Believe it or not, professors are people too and they want you to ask questions. They are a specialist in their field who love talking about their speciality just like you love talking about your passion. Communicating with your professors can not only help you better understand the material, but can make you stand out from your peers for things like a reference letter in the future.
6. College is a learning experience for everyone, do not be scared to fail
Most importantly, do not be afraid to fail. Jumping into college from high school is a huge adjustment that takes some time for everyone to settle. You have to learn to take care of yourself all while trying to maintain good grades and a social life. It is perfectly OK not to get it on the first try. The only thing that matter is that you get back up and try again.
