They call us "Michiganders" or "Michiganians." Through previous governors we have had, we have adapted this new name for Michigan residents. But what does it mean to be these things? Michigan is just the mitten state, what is there to do around here?
I have prepared a list of destinations and events that may have fellow Michiganders ready to book their next trip, or even those who are not residents of the pure state to plan a trip here, too.
Reasons to visit Pure Michigan
1. We are the Great Lakes State
Michigan is surrounded by five masses of fresh water. Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, Lake Ontario and Lake Erie make up the largest body of fresh water on earth according to livescience.com. These lakes are popular for boating, fishing, and other recreational activities as well as serving as an important mode of transportation of goods. There are beaches that make great tourist spots for everyone such as Grand Haven, which is a beach on Lake Michigan. You won't want to miss the fun in the sun!
2. Mackinac Island & City
There are tons of tourist attractions in both Mackinac Island and Mackinac City including visiting the battle forts and taking a look at the history of the two locations. There is also a ton of shopping and fun events to look into while you are here. You can find many places to stay while you are here, and some of the areas even have beach access. They always have something going on! And if you visit the Upper Peninsula, it is cool to view the scenery off the Mackinac Bridge.
3. Detroit
I don't suggest roaming all around the city of Detroit, but there are some cool things to visit if you go there. There is the Detroit Institute of Arts that has one of the largest and most significant pieces of art inside. There is Hitsville U.S.A. which is the history of the famous label and hit-maker. There is also Comerica Park, which is the home of our beloved Detroit Tigers. As well as Ford Field where the Lions play and Joe Louis Arena where our Red Wings play. Detroit also has a zoo and many other tourist attractions including the Renaissance Center and more!
4) Ann Arbor
Home of the Michigan Wolverines, keeper of the University of Michigan and one of the most beautiful cities this state holds. Even if you're not a Michigan fan, this place should still be on your "Go To" list. Some of the restaurants have even been featured in the tv show Man vs. Food.
5) Lansing
Our state capital and also home of the Michigan State University Spartans. There is so much to do around this city like Potter Park Zoo, catching a game at Cooley Law Stadium which is home of the Lugnuts, and the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame. For big book readers there is also the Library of Michigan. Even if you are not a State fan, there is so much more to this city than the college.
6) County Fairs
There are tons of opportunities to eat unhealthy, fried food and ride carnival rides around this state. We have the Ingham County fair, Ionia fair, Monroe County fair, Eaton County fair, and so many more which are listed here!
7) Traverse City
They call it the ideal place to retire because of its slow-pace vibe, but they are known to most United States residents as the Cherry Capital of the country. They hold the National Cherry Festival which attracts about 500,000 visitors in the first week of July. There is also the Traverse City Film Festival and tons of places to shop 'til you drop!
8) Sleeping Bear Dunes
There is so much to do on the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Most activities are recreational, but there are plenty of places to grab a good meal and have some family water fun! Most people use the area as a good place to get away with their campers and tents and enjoy a peaceful time in the dunes.
9) The Outdoor Expo & More!
An attraction a little newer to the state of Michigan, but there is plenty to do at this expo! Once a year, located at the Ingham County Fairgrounds of Mason, Michigan, the Outdoor Expo & More holds a classic car show, antique tractor show, motorcycle show, an all-day music venue, a beer tent, crafters show, and features many food vendors when you are craving some good eats. Hundreds of vendors are featured in the expo that meet the interests for mom, dad and the kids! There is so much to do and see at the Outdoor Expo & More! You're going to have to check it out for yourself.
If you don't want to drive all the way down to Sandusky, Ohio for thrills, and lines, then there is another alternative. It's probably not as exciting but still fun, located in Muskegon, Michigan. Michigan's Adventure has a great water park and some great rides to fill the void of an amusement park adventure.
Next time you are planning a trip, take a look at all that Pure Michigan has in store. There is so much more to do around here, make it your own. There are sites to see, new people to meet, and memories to make here in Michigan.
