Yes I write Poetry.
Telling people you’re a Creative Writing major is hard enough. It’s constant, you’re bombarded by the same brand of questions over and over again.
“What do you want to do with that?”
“No seriously, what do you want to do?”
My absolute favorite is, “what do you want to teach?”
But when I tell them I write mainly, it’s as if they’re seeing an endangered species. They reminisce about writing love poems to the high school sweethearts, the good old days.
Then come those comments.
“I loved Edgar Allen Poe!”
“I used to write poetry.”
Then comes my absolute favorite.
“It’s simply a hobby, you can’t do anything with that!”
“Poetry is dead.”
Okay, I get it. Poetry’s not the most consumed forms of english these days. It’s what a lot of people dread in their high school english class.
But here’s the thing, I love it. I’ll try my damndest to perfect my craft.
For me; It’s painting images in the mind with words, it’s invoking feelings and making you remember things that the poet never hinted at.
You read someone else’s poetry and you can feel that person’s emotions when they were writing that piece. The emotions in poets of the past are still universal and timeless.
Poetry’s not dead. I’m still writing it.
