If you haven't had a cannoli at either Mike's or Modern Pastry in the North End, I really don't understand what you've been doing with your time in Boston. You should go, like, right now. But not before reading this article for some insight on which shop to hit up.
Mike's Pastry; 300 Hanover Street. Mike's Pastry is definitely the better known of of the two North End shops. Especially on weekends, the line outside snakes down the street and you might find yourself waiting at least 30 minutes for a cannoli. However, it's well worth it. Mike's has a huge selection of cannoli flavors, from Oreo to pistachio (the peanut butter is my favorite, in case you were wondering). Also, Mike's tends to draw a little more star power due to their widely known reputation. Last week, the Anaheim Ducks rolled in as I gawked with powdered sugar all over my face. Embarrassing, but an experience you can only have at Mike's Pastry.
Modern Pastry; 257 Hanover Street. Located almost right across the street, Modern Pastry is more of a stop for locals rather than tourists. They might not have the same widely known reputation, but, oh, my God are their cannoli's amazing. Instead of the variety of flavors offered at Mike's, Modern has the best traditional cannoli's around -- hands down. Seriously, go for the chocolate covered shell with ricotta filling. You may not hear the name Modern tossed around on the street as much as Mike's, but the line still stretches down Hanover Street on the weekend.
In the end, Mike's and Modern are amazing pastry shops. You will end up waiting in line at either place, but it's completely worth it. If you are looking to experiment with different flavor cannoli's, Mike's is the place for you. If you are looking for the best traditional cannoli in the city, hit up Modern. Or just treat yourself and get both! You know you want to!
