My first week in college is coming to a close and it has been nothing short of hectic. There are so many elements of the campus and general information that goes along with being at the university. My school in particular has held many meeting that communicate all the information in regards to the university. The information has come fast and plentiful, and most of it is truly vital for the most efficient education possible. I am aware that not everyone attends my school, so I will listing the important things you should know after your first week on any campus.

Where The Health Services Are And How They Work

It is really important that you find where your college keeps it's health services on campus. In case you are not feeling well or you have a emergency, it is key you know where to go on campus. You should also know how the services work. For example, I know that my health services come with my tuition, so any treatment I get is free. It is essential that you know how the services work because you don't want to end up having to owe health services money. It is also important to know about health services so you can decide whether to get treatment or not. Since I know that my treatment is free, I decided to take advantage of this opportunity and schedule physical therapy appointments. I urge you to find out as much as you can about the health center and take advantage of their services if you can!

Police On Campus

It is important that you learn about your colleges campus police system. You may be in a dangerous position on campus or just need to be escorted back to your room because you don't feel comfortable walking back alone. The police within a university atmosphere usually plays a huge role in keeping the campus safe, so make sure you know where the station is and how to get in contact with them in case of a emergency. Make sure the find out the name of the chief of police and find the emergency phone number. Also, make sure you become familiar with the emergency phones that are most likely posted around campus.

The Buildings In Your School

You don't necessary have to be adapt to the whole campus your first week on campus, but it is important that you know your specific school. Whether its the school of filmmaking or the school of business, you should know where the important buildings within the school are. You should where the administration are housed and where the majority of your classes will be held. It is also important that you know where the library ,financial, and academic building are. All of these building are vital in providing a full education for you, especially entering school as a freshman.

The Mentoring Programs

The first year in college is going to be long journey. You will tested mentally like never before your freshman year and will sometimes need assistant. You should already know where the writing center is and where tutoring is held. You may or may not ever use these services, but it is important that at least know where they are and how they operate. You may need help on your first paper or need assistance studying for your first exam. It is important that you start of the school year very strong and there are programs available on your campus to ensure that you do, it is your job to seek them out and use them to your advantage!

The Hangout Spots

Believe or not, having a social life in college is important in your academic and overall growth in college. You should have made many friends with your first week and you should also know where the people among your university like to hang. Whether its the basketball courts, gym, cafe,etc. you should seek these places out and become socially active within the community. You should always take some time over the year and relax with friends and hang out. You don't want to build up to much stress, especially within your first year, so these hangout spots can be a safe haven for you when school starts rolling.

There are so many elements of college and I could go on and on about what you need to know about the place you now call home. These elements listed above are simply my five most important elements you need to know the first week. As the school year rolls on, it is important that you add to this list of campus knowledge and eventually perfect the knowledge of your campus!

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace.
