We Will Miss You, Keller Cat

We Will Miss You, Keller Cat

After serving as a mascot of the dorm for years, the loss of the beloved Keller Cat has devastated Keller-dwellers at Auburn University.

The one-eyed local celebrity, known for faithfully greeting the residents of Helen Keller Hall, has been reported missing by The Plainsman this week. After seeing girls through their transition to collegiate life, this loss can be especially heartbreaking.

Having very strong and profound feelings of grief after the disappearance (and assumed death) of a symbol such as the Keller Cat is normal. Our animal companions bring out the best in us, so when we lose them, we often feel we have lost some part of ourselves. Here are some of the common reactions you might experience and strategies to help you endure through these painful emotions:

Intense sadness.
You may feel devastated and broken-hearted. You might cry a lot. You say, “My dear Helen should be here. I just can’t accept that she’s really gone.” Time will help you heal. Allow yourself to grieve, but if that becomes too painful, take a break and distract yourself by going on a walk or getting Starbucks with friends.

Guilt.
Guilty feelings keep us from having to accept the reality of the loss. We think, “If only I had appreciated Helen the Keller Cat while she was here.” This is a normal feeling, but we need to remember the good life we gave to our furry friend and that we did the best we could.

Anxiety.
You may wonder, “Can I get through this?” The answer is “Yes!” Give yourself some time and space, and take it one day at a time. Give yourself what you need: comfort food, naps, time with friends. Let others know that you’re going through a difficult time so they can support you as well.

When you’re ready, consider how you would like to honor the memory of your beloved Keller cat. Consider writing a poem or holding candlelight ceremony in hopes that it might help you to accept the loss. Remember that Helen the Keller Cat would not want us to stay sad; it’s most likely her desire that we go on and be happy and love again someday.

Finally, remember that you are blessed. After all, you were privileged enough to be a person who shared in that special animal’s life. You two developed a unique bond that has changed who you are for the better, and that can never be taken away. May the spirit of the Keller Cat live in our hearts forever!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
