Although there are several things that Towson does well, there are some things that can be improved. Last year my building council fought for a 24-hour gym and for Towson to label the calories on campus. Although these things did not happen, I still want to fight for better nutrition in dining halls. There are other things that can be fought for on campus. Some on this list are more realistic than others.
1. Dining Hall Hours
It never made sense to me that Paws is open until 2am on the weekdays, but only open until 11pm on weekends. College students tend to go out on the weekends. It would save us money if Paws was open until 11pm on weekdays and 2am on weekends.
2. Nutrition/ Being Healthy
There are only some places on campus that label the calories for food. Au Bon Pain labels the calories for everything there, so we know what we are eating. It would keep us healthier if we actually knew what we are putting into our bodies.
We also need fresher fruits and vegetables on campus. Anytime the fruit is not fresh in the dining halls, I tell someone, because if the healthy foods are not fresh, we will not eat them.
3. Wi-fi
Towson wi-fi is the struggle. We need more wi-fi routers on campus.
4. Donating Retail Points
I love when different organizations have bake sales to benefit their philanthropy. The problem is, most of us never have cash on us. However, we all have our one cards. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could use our retail points as donations? If we could do this, we might donate a lot more money to philanthropies.
5. Meal Plan/ Extra Meals
As an Orientation Leader, the hardest thing I ever had to explain to new freshman was how the meal plan works. It is not realistic for Towson to completely change the meal plan, but a certain amount of meals should roll over to the next week. Everyone knows that struggle every Thursday to spend those extra meals.
Another possibility is for us to be able to donate our meals to a homeless shelter. Sometimes during the year, a sorority will set up something with Chartwells where students can donate a meal to a specific charity. We should do this more. We should all have the chance to volunteer to donate meals during the semester.
6. Commuters on Snow Days
During the winter, there are extremely bad snow days where commuters cannot get to class. If classes are not cancelled, commuters should have a couple free snow days by the discretion of the professor to not go to class for safety concerns. I remember one day it was so icy, but we still had class. The walk from the Towers to the LA building was scary; I could only imagine driving in that weather.
The harder we fight for things to change on campus, the better chance that they will change. Towson is doing great things to make campus a better and safer place.
