10 Ways I Got My Life In Check
Amanda Snow

College is a time for self-growth, experimentation, and learning. College is also a time of stupidity, struggling to get through classes alive, and rewarding yourself with sleep in your free time. Going on three years of college, transferring schools, and joining a sorority, I have learned a lot about what makes for a balanced life. The feeling of balance is one that puts someone on top of the world, a feeling that is rare and unique.

Here are the top ten ways I got my life in check which allow me to feel balanced:

1. Getting close to graduation

Graduation is an exciting time and was something that I thought was not coming soon, turns out I was wrong! I am three months away from graduating which motivates me to push myself harder knowing that I'm close to the finish line. Getting an education is such a good thing that it kind of explains itself. If you're feeling like your in a rut and you need help getting out of it, go see an Academic Advisor! They are so good at helping you set up a game plan and support you in achieving it.

2. Physical health and weight loss

This may sound like another commercial and you may think, “um no,” but last year this time I lost around thirty pound and people asked me how I did it…Fitbit!! I am more than in love with my Fitbit, how could I not? It tracks my health and tells me when I need to keep going. When I lost my Fitbit, I ended up gaining the weight back which sucked, but now that I got a new, better one, I am so stoked to hit the gym and take control of my life! The Fitbit may not be the right device for everyone, but it certainly worked for me.

3. Internships

Internships help college students prepare for a long-term job, teaching them skills that they may or may not use in the real work-more than less of the time, they actually apply to yourself and your degree. Some internships are hard to find, but many colleges are very helpful in finding one that works well and suits you.

4. Extracurricular activities

School isn’t the only thing in your life. Many outside activities such as sports, community service, and Greek Life help you make friends and stay engaged with your personal values and what you love doing.

5. Healthy eating

You’d be surprised how eating certain foods affects your mood and how you feel. It also clears up your skin and gives you a boost of happiness!

6. Job interviews

Recently, I have set up many job interviews which helps me relax financially, another reason my life is getting in check. Honestly, I spend money like no other which is a flaw but I'm getting better. Hopefully one of these jobs stick! Finding a job while in college and taking a heavy workload (15-21 semester credits) isn’t the easiest thing to do.

7. Supportive friends

My friends are there through thick and thin and just make me happy in general.

8. Supportive family

Your family is and will always be your best friends. Family members are there to love you and be there for you, it’s just what they do!

9. Mental health

Mental health is an important factor to remember when you're feeling down. Whether this is with therapy or getting outside, it helps to put the puzzle pieces together.

10. Organization and positivity

Being organized is something I do…a little too well. Staying organized allows you to know where everything is. The best way that I stay organized is through a clean room and a planner, two of the best things that keep my life in check!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
