Queen Bey has outdone herself once again. She has not only proven herself as a vocalist but as an artist in general. This is the moment that Kanye foreshadowed all that time ago when he said, “Beyonce had the best video of all time.” This is it -- this is that moment. For something with a title as sweet as "Lemonade," this burned like whiskey.
"Lemonade" is not for me. "Lemonade" is for black women. I am a white middle-class girl and do not belong to that world, and I can appreciate that it is not mine. I am not trying to claim it as mine. As Beyonce sampled Malcolm X in her album, “the most disrespected person in America is the Black woman, the most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman." After all, that is what feminism is really about -- knowing when something is for your sisters and supporting them in it. We always hear from black men and the problems they face in their raps, but we rarely hear what black women have to go through, and man is this a way to express that.
I hope all the black women write about "Lemonade." I hope black women who have knowledge of feminism theory write scholarly articles about this album. I hope all the women with "magician" men in their lives find the love they deserve.
As a woman, I am a part of a sisterhood, I cannot help but feeling empowered just the same. This album tackles things all women and anyone that loves other people struggle with. As someone who has been dragged through the dirt by people I love, and particularly as someone who has been cheated on, this album deals with everything I went through -- from grief and loss to forgiveness and resurrection. I think one of the most important lines about what a struggle it is to be cheated on is about how people see you. Not only are you hurt by the one you love, but people always have to put in their two cents, “What’s worse, lookin’ jealous or crazy?” I think that is something this album is really addressing and what makes it such a masterpiece. She is using art to not only tell her story and express her feelings but control how the world sees her. She is telling the story, not the media.
Watching Beyonce publicly drag Jay-Z for 65 minutes was probably the best thing that could have come out of my final exams procrastination. Maybe the best part about this is that she is making a huge amount of money off of this. She is profiting from his mistake. Seeing how strong she is reminds me that she is not only a star but a person, and if she can get through this, then so can I. Beyonce smashing cars made me feel my own muscles flowing with power. “Don’t Hurt Yourself” reminded me that I have the power over myself and I am worth love. This album really put relationships and men into perspective; if Queen Bey can be cheated on, then it has nothing to do with how perfect the other woman is -- it is not about you or her.
I wish this had come out two years ago. It could have saved me from a lot of bad life decisions and ultimately from myself.
