About a week ago this clip was trending on the Internet. The clip is a storyboard from a widely popular cartoon called "Rick & Morty" and it is a reenactment from the transcripts of the Georgia court case. Originally this clip premiered at the San Diego Comic Con a couple of weeks ago by Justin Roiland, the creator of the flagship animated television series. Since its premiere within a small conference room at the San Diego Convention Center, it has quickly gone viral. It was not until recently that Adult Swim provided a High Quality video of the screening. You can watch an embedded version below.
The video listed already has over 1,300,000 views and is freakin' hilarious. However, what makes this video special is not the comedic characters, Rick's drunken and slurry voice, or Morty's insecurity and awkwardness. What makes this video special is the fact that this actually happened. Yes, you have heard this right, all of the dialogue that was presented in this video is real and not made up. The reenactment is based on a transcript of a court case between the State of Georgia and Denver Fenton Allen. The storyboard is reenacted word for word from a court reporter who was there. The event happened in a courtroom in Rome, GA on the week of June 6th, 2016. The horrifying back and forth banter was between Judge Bryant Durham (played by Morty) and Denver Fenton Allen (played by Rick). In this case, Allen, a murder defendant, is attending a hearing in the Georgia Superior Court. The hearing only lasted 20 minutes but in the short amount of time, Judge Durham and Mr. Allen were able to exchange some drastically heated words in the courtroom.
The conversation displays crass obscenities that are best explained in the video. Allen made numerous threats of murder to Judge Durham and his family in response of Judge Durham's remark that Allen had a "constitutional right to be a dumbass." There were also remarks of homophobic language and slurs that were directed at each other. The judge found Allen in contempt of court and kept adding more and more penitentiary sentences to Fenton with each and every outburst.
At first, I thought the video was a preview to season 3 after the season 2 finale but the creator, Justin Roiland, who also voices Rick and Morty, made the storyboard to paint a picture of what happened in the Rome, Georgia courtroom. After seeing a HD version put up I decided to give it a watch and was taken back by the vulgarity of it all. Rick and Morty's impression of the court case brought a lot of humor to this morbid hearing.
To all those readers who think that this is not true, there is plenty of evidence and articles to back it up. An article from the Washington Post has called the incident quite obscene reporting that this may be an interesting trial. A transcript was soon leaked and law blogger, Keith Lee soon posted this up on his Twitter page. Here is the link for all those who are interested.
