1. It features a strong, independent female lead.
Monse has been through a lot, but she doesn't let that affect her confidence, her character, or her vibe. She is so strong, independent, and respectable. She stands up both for herself and for others, especially when no one else will. She is fearless, brave, courageous, and she doesn't take any nonsense from anybody. I think that everyone can learn a valuable lesson from her and her extraordinary character.
2. It gives perspective to things a lot of us know nothing about.
For example, gangs. Not all of us have them living right in our very community, and not all of us know someone who's been inherently sucked into one since their youth. "On My Block" offers its watchers a new perspective, allowing us to be more open-minded, sympathetic, and empathetic to other people's situations.
3. It's pretty hilarious in a shedding light type of way.
The best shows are the ones that shed light on modern issues in society, but they do it in a seemingly light and comical way. "On My Block" is a perfect example of this, similar to the TV show, "Grownish."
4. It's Netflix's newest hit Netflix-only TV Series.
We all know that Netflix is pretty good at launching these awesome Netflix-only television shows. From Stranger Things to Fuller House to 13 Reasons Why, Netflix is no stranger to producing extremely successful and popular TV shows that captivate so much teenage and adult attention alike.
5. It's a coming of age high school show.
The best type of show!
6. It's super relatable.
"On My Block" does a great job of navigating high school in a simplistic manner. It doesn't exaggerate it like High School Musical (Not that I mind!), but it enlightens high school in a really good way. It allows the viewer to empathize with the main character because it is so normal, human, and relatable.
7. Cesar is like, really cute.
Which is, of course, a given.
8. It teaches us about friendships and relationships.
9. It teaches us that we should love people no matter how much baggage they come with.
It's difficult to love people who aren't "safe" by sociological standards. But, then again, if you love somebody for who they truly are, their past, their tendencies and the skeletons that they have in their closet shouldn't interfere with your perception of them. Everyone makes mistakes, everyone is born with or into uncontrollable things, and nobody is perfect. Everyone has baggage. If you really love them, you will overlook that. Monse teaches us that because she finally accepts that Cesar can't help what he has been born into, and she loves him unconditionally.
10. It teaches us that vulnerability can lead us to do crazy things.
Unfortunately, it's high school and everybody makes mistakes. Then again, it's sort of just the way life goes. We learn from our mistakes, especially those that we make when we're in really vulnerable, fragile positions.
11. It has really good music.
12. It's so human.
Not that I don't love fiction, but the way that it is so fun and realistic is really refreshing and natural.
13. It shows how we are all human, we make mistakes, and being a teenager is a difficult but fun thing.
14. It teaches us that sometimes you're going to get heartbroken in high school, but you're going to get through it and it does not make you any less of a person.
High school does not last forever. The bad moments, situations, mistakes, and conflicts will melt away in no time. The happy, blissful moments are the one's that we're going to keep with us for the rest of our life.
