In This Article:

Suicide has become extremely prevalent in modern society. It seems everywhere one looks, they see something about it. Whether it be in the news, like with the passing of celebrities like Chester Bennington, Kate Spade, or Anthony Bourdain, or in the media like the Netflix original "13 Reasons Why" or the new ABC show "A Million Little Things." Suicide is very serious, and despite its ever-present exposure, it is important to not become desensitized to it. There are very important warning signs that someone close to you may be contemplating suicide, and it would be a good idea to educate yourself on them properly.

Someone contemplating suicide may experience a change in attitude or behavior. They may begin to speak or move with unusual speed or slowness. They also may suddenly become less concerned about their physical appearance or have some great change, like a shocking haircut or a drop or gain in weight.

7. Dangerous or self-harmful behavior.

This includes potentially dangerous behavior, such as reckless driving, engaging in unsafe sex, and increased use of drugs and/or alcohol, as well as self-harm in the form of cutting or other self-mutilation.

8. Recent trauma or life crisis.

A major life crisis might trigger a suicide attempt. WebMD sited the death of a loved one or pet, divorce or break-up of a relationship, diagnosis of a major illness, loss of a job, or serious financial problems all as possible life crises. Another may be if someone close to someone else were to also attempt or commit suicide, this could trigger a chain reaction and cause a suicide attempt for another.

9. Making preparations.

This includes both putting their personal affairs in order like visiting friends and family members, giving away personal possessions, making a will, or cleaning up their room or home. It also includes making the suicide plans, like writing a note or preparing the means. For example, buying a firearm or other means like poison.

10. Threatening suicide.

If someone is talking about killing themselves, even in passing or in jest, this could be a serious warning sign that they may be planning to hurt or kill themselves. WebMD states that 50% to 75% of those considering suicide will give someone -- a friend or relative -- a warning sign. Not everyone who is considering suicide will say so, and not everyone who threatens suicide will follow through with it, but EVERY threat of suicide should be taken seriously.

I've lost more than one friend to suicide, and that is what spurred me to educate myself on the warning signs. Not all cases will follow these signs exactly, but this list of warning signs is very important. While it will never be your responsibility to stop someone from taking their own life, it is important to know the signs so that you can help a friend or loved one get help from the PROPER people and resources. There are suicide hotlines available and further information online. The National Suicide Prevention Hotline is available 24 hours a day at the following number: 1-800-273-8255.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
