12 Struggles People With Wanderlust Understand

Sometimes getting lost can be so hard.

12 Struggles People With Wanderlust Understand

The world -- it's a big, beautiful place just waiting to be discovered. Foreign lands, historic countries, and rich culture are calling your name. All you have to do is jump in the car, hop on that plane, or ride that bus off into the distance with a one-way ticket in hand. There's so much to do, so much to see, so much to explore. But that one-way ticket is usually round-trip, and getting to where you want to go is always harder than it seems. Here are the top struggles of having a soul consumed by wanderlust.

1. Daydreaming about all the amazing places you're going to see

Whether you are in class, at work, or even driving down the road, your head is always consumed with the amazing places you can (and will) go. It's hard to listen to lecture when you could be exploring the heights of Machu Picchu. Your daydreaming is almost an escape from reality in some circles. You find yourself constantly reminded that you just have to get through today to do all the amazing things tomorrow.

2. Educating yourself is half the fun

You can't wait to take on the world, and when you do, you'll get the most out of it. You look up favorite sights, shops, places to eat, and hole-in-the-wall businesses to add to your itinerary. You read up on a little history, learn about the local legends, and try to become as familiar as possible with the culture of the destination you're headed for. There's nothing like discovering something you're really excited to see or experience.

3. How you get where you're going is as unique as the destination itself

As far as having a schedule and itinerary, the spectrum varies between different people. Some will make a spreadsheet of all the tiny details (yes, I "have a guy") and some just pack a bag with a fistful of cash and want to see whatever comes their way. Most people are somewhere in the middle.

4. Trying to convince your parents that everything will be okay

"Dad, Greece is safe and I don't need a bodyguard." I've tried to convince my parents on more occasions than one that I am not the daughter in "Taken" and I don't need Liam Neeson to come save me (even though that would be really cool). Okay, maybe it's not safe...but it's Greece! Think of Santorini and all the blue-roofed houses! To pull the double standard, it's likely that if you're a girl, safety is an even bigger concern to your parents. Ease parental woes by purchasing pepper spray and investing in self-defense education.

5. Money, money, money

You've got Kanye West-level dreams and a 50-cent (rapper and literal) budget. Oh, the eternal struggle of college students across the nation. You already have a love/hate relationship with money. I'm talking about the debate between splurging on a $5 pizza or saving a few extra bucks. Plane tickets are expensive and you already know you want to get souvenirs and eat amazing meals while you're away. Now you just have to find the money to do so...and so goes the $5 into the piggy bank.

6. Wanting to go off the grid for two years

There's so much to see! Why not grab a backpack and take on the next great adventure? The reality is you've got family, friends, work, and school. You want to escape life and see what happens. It's all right, I do too sometimes. Woe is me.

7. Imagining all the amazing people you will meet

You want to meet sweet old ladies who have seen incredible things in history that you can't even fathom, or didn't even know happened. You're dying to play with and meet little kids that can't even understand a word you say but think you're a "cool American teen." Service trips in Africa? Amazing. You're crying out to make friends in foreign nations that you communicate with in whatever forms possible for years after your initial meeting. The people you will meet will surprise you. Thanks to our favorite waiter, I met a family member in Amalfi, Italy that nobody even knew existed. Resemblance? I can see it. Imagine that.

8. Study abroad is overwhelming

There are so many options and you have to choose one or two. How are you going to pick? Thus, many students choose the stereotypical Europe option--see dozens of cities in a short time period. It's an oldie but a goodie. You want to go abroad every year but have neither the time, hold on your credits, nor finances to do so. And let's not even mention the jealousy you get over seeing all those Instagram posts from people seeing amazing things in the city you've been dreaming of exploring.

9. Fantasizing about foreign food

Picture it now: you, tasting fresh homemade pastas and gelato, perfect Argentinian empanadas, spicy Indian curry, and Chinese food that doesn't resemble Panda Express. Got that? Good, now add on sipping authentic craft German beers, rich Spanish wines, and sweet French champagne. Need I say more?

10. Not knowing where to start first

So many countries, so little time, so little money. I think that pretty much covers it.

11. "Exploring" is a part of your regular vocabulary

Wherever you go in life, even if you're anchored down at your basecamp, you want to go find things you didn't know existed and run wild and free. Your friends have heard you beg on random Wednesday nights to go "explore" way too much. You never know what you will discover when you give yourself the opportunity to do so. Go crazy, kid.

12. Realizing that no matter where your travels take you, there's just no place like home.

You could see the entire globe, meet the most incredible people, and have experiences that completely turn your view on life upside-down. But you'll always know you belong at home. It's your family, it's your friends, it's the life you created for yourself. It's your home plate. And there's just no place in the entire world that can really compare. And that's the way it should be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
