VSCO Controversy: It's More Than Feminism

I’m sure many of you have heard of, seen, or even have the new social media called VSCO. For those of you who may not know; it’s an app that you can add pictures to. Kind of like Instagram but anyone can see your pictures and save them or add them to their ‘collection.’ But it’s become a huge controversy on Twitter. People are arguing over a girl’s right to post her naked body for everyone to see and how she should not be judged and people should keep their opinions to themselves. I believe in girls showing off who they are, being comfortable with their body and owning it. But I also believe in respecting yourself, especially on social media. If you wouldn’t want your parents to see it, why would you post it?

Go ahead and post pictures of you in your bikini at the beach, or your results from working out every week and working towards the body you’ve always wanted. Our bodies are beautiful things but as soon as you’re posting pictures of private places, it becomes a whole new story. People are going to react to it, and you can’t necessarily get offended if you are posting it on social media for everyone to see. There is most definitely going to be a reaction and isn’t that what you’re looking for if you’re posting it?

A girl brought up the breast feeding issue to me and how she guessed that I would be the one against it since I’m the one saying not to post your naked body on social media if you don’t want people to comment. But I support breastfeeding in public places because it is a way of life. I support it because mothers that are breastfeeding are feeding their baby to keep it alive, they aren’t waving it around telling everyone to look, trying to get a reaction out of people. Most women are modest about it. If you’re going to post pictures of your naked body, there are other sites you can use that are specifically for that OR if you post them because it’s your freedom of expression please realize others have their freedom of speech.

Also, along with this controversy is the double standard being presented through VSCO. I’ve seen many girls post that their uncomfortable with guys having a VSCO and looking at their pictures. Why are you posting pictures in the first place if you don’t want everyone seeing them? If guys were posting pictures like the girls were they would be shamed and yelled at on all platforms of social media but it’s okay for girls to do it?

I’ve seen many of these girl’s push feminism in with this. Feminism is defined as “the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” EQUALITY is the key word here. We are all equals and that’s what these said ‘feminists’ claim so why are people trying to say VSCO is just for girls? It is not. And nor is any other social media site. I am simply putting it out there for people to read and understand someone else’s point of view on it. Many of you have claimed your freedom of expression and this is my freedom of speech.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
