Everybody says college is the time to try new things. Many of us are excited for the change and growth that happens in our first four years away from home, yet taking the plunge into cold, unchartered waters is always unpredictable.
Growing up never did I envision myself stepping into the world of writing, yet here we are. Coming into college as a confused freshman with no major, I had no idea what I was doing or what the right path was for me. I remember being thrilled to embark on a journey of my own, on my own, but still, I was unsure of everything.
Fast forward 14 months and here I am, finally with a major but still confused as ever.
After attending a small, private school from kindergarten through 12th grade, leaping to the largest public university in the state was a bit daunting, to say the least. All my life, I had been a big fish in a small pond, so I had no idea what I was doing when the roles became reversed.
As each month passed by, however, I slowly grew accustomed to the fast-paced college environment and by the end of my first year, I had found my place.
Through participating in formal sorority recruitment during my first month of school, I found my home-away-from-home and my new tight-knit community. Now within my sorority, I have several leadership positions that have all given me a sense of purpose and more meaning behind my sorority letters. It’s my sisters who keep me going on days when I have worries or doubts for what is to come. And it’s my sisters who constantly remind me to keep trying new things and always push me to be my best.
If not for them, I wouldn’t be here writing today. If not for them, I wouldn’t have gone on to apply to be a University Ambassador. As an Ambassador, I have the privilege of sharing my school pride and gives tours to (hopefully) convince prospective students to join Wolfpack Nation.
It is through these things that have made the big pond feel not so big, and I can't stress enough the importance of getting involved on campus.
To the person who's a year behind me wondering what in the world they are going to do, don't worry, the water WILL warm up and you'll find your way. Even when things feel rocky and the current is strong, in the words of Dory, "just keep swimming."
