Essential Kids

Oh, February. The month of love, increased chocolate, Hallmark card sales and kisses. Because Single Awareness Day (also known as Valentine's Day) is right around the corner, I decided to seek some advice to prepare myself for the holiday. Instead of asking someone older and wiser, I sought advice from a group of Kindergarten students that I get the pleasure of working with every day. Here is a few of their responses to the topic of love, relationships, and Valentine's Day.

NOTE: I did not make any of this up. This is 100% the words of 5-6 year-olds. I also changed these cute kiddos names so they won't be embarrassed when they're older.

What is love?

"You kiss?" -Lynn, 6

"It's when somebody likes someone and somebody else likes some, and they go on something called a date." -Jane, 5

"By being in friendship." -Daniel, 5

"It means you like each other. It means marry. And kiss." -Trent, 6

If someone likes you, what are you supposed to do?

"Say thank you." -Trey, 6

"Do nothing." -Cole, 5

"Hang out with them all the time." -May, 5

"Kiss them. Or just hug them. Or high-five." -Trent, 6

"You hold hands with them." -Anne, 5

Why do we celebrate Valentine's Day?

"'Cause the Indians and Pilgrims thought, um, they would have a Valentine's 'cause the Indians think they found their land first and the Pilgrims want to celebrate Valentine's so they can share this world." -Jane, 5

"Because it's good and thankless." -Trey, 6

"Because it's when someone be's your Valentine girl and boy." -Alex, 6

"Because we like each other and we want to kiss." -Trent, 6

"Because it's the most important day of the year and we give gifts to everyone." -Anne, 6

When is Valentine's Day?

"Friday." -Lynn, 6

Who is Cupid?

"Um, Jesus." -Anne, 5

"A mouse." -Lynn, 6

"A naked baby that shoots arrows and falls in love." -Trey, 6

"He dances." -May, 5

"I think we read a story about him. He, he, he got in jail because, uh, he was helping people get married and there was a ruler." -Paige, 5

How do you ask a boy/girl to be your Valentine?

"Kiss her. Or just say, 'Will you marry me?' Or say, 'I like you.' Or shake your booty." -Trent, 6

"Will you be my Valentimes?" -Trey, 6

"Will you marry me, please?" -Lynn, 6

"Give them a Valentine's Day card that says 'Will you be my Valentine?' and they might sign it." -Anne, 5

If anyone could be your Valentine who would it be?

"Don't tell anyone this. I have a boyfriend." -Paige, 5

"My dad." -Jane, 5

"Miss Kaylee." -Lynn, 6 (I said yes of course!)

Happy Valentine's Day from my wacky group of Kindergarten students and myself. May it be filled with love, kisses, and maybe marriage.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
