Rising housing prices and other factors like education and police brutality are pushing black people out of Austin and into its Northern suburbs and other areas, according to a recent documentary produced by the UT chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.
The organization took an in-depth look at the issue in light of a 2014 UT study that used census data to show that Austin was the only one of the 10 fastest growing major cites in America to see a decline in its black population between 2000 and 2010.
According to the study, Austin saw a 20.4 percent overall rise in its population during the period, with a 5.4 percent drop in its black population. That put its 2010 black population at roughly 8 percent of its roughly 773,000 residents.
Several members of the Austin black community interviewed in the documentary (seen below) emphasized the idea of starting something new for blacks in Austin.
