I came into college with a plan. Major in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and apply to law school. I knew what I wanted and what classes I needed to take in order to get there.
Now, I have an existential crisis almost daily about what I’m doing with my life, just ask my roommate.
As I sit here and type this I have my Excel spreadsheet open, just glaring at me, making me wonder what I should do with my future. Coming into college I tested out of the language requirement but still wanted to become fluent, so I continued with Spanish.
This prompted the thought of double majoring: PPE and Spanish. Still doable and impressive looking, not a problem. Then looking further into PPE I realized you had to apply. Applying seemed like a formality, but after asking an advisor I was informed that only about 30 percent of applicants were actually accepted to the major.
Could I be denied from my major?
Queue a small mental breakdown when I thought I was going to end up going nowhere in life. (I’m dramatic but it freaked me out.) If I was going to have to apply to PPE I might as well try to apply to the Ford School of Public Policy because it goes with what I’m interested in.
I also started looking into other options: I had taken Econ 101 so maybe I’d do Economics and Spanish. I’ve also taken International Studies 101, so maybe an International Studies major would be best. Then one of my friends suggested the insane idea: What about triple majoring in International Studies, Economics, and Spanish?
Who would be crazy enough to even try?
I mapped it all out and could potentially triple major and still graduate in 4 years. It sounds insane.
It is insane.
So, here’s the thing, I still don’t know where I’m going with all of this “major” talk. All I know is that I want to go to law school and I have to graduate college with a major to do that.
For those of you with an idea of where you want to go after college, look on your university or college website and scroll through every major. You might be surprised with what you can major in. For those of you who still have no clue what you’re doing or what to major in: try to get your core classes done first, take classes that are prerequisites to multiple majors, and if you end up enjoying a class so much you want to major in it, figure out how you’re going to get a job with it later. Nowadays, majors in college don’t even need to pertain to the job people are going after.
A college major just makes you have a unique perspective as a competitive applicant.
