UF 2014 Year Review

Five memories that sum up 2014

UF 2014 Year Review

This year was a very interesting one for the University of Florida; from the Gators reaching the Final Four in college basketball to a random Caucasian guy walking around campus threatening student's lives, 2014 had it all. Here is a quick farewell to an interesting 12 months.

1. Gators Reach the Final Four:  Everything looked promising for the Gators basketball team. The university even sent an email to the student servers saying that in case the Gators reached the finals (which looked pretty probable), the O'Connell Center would display the game on a giant screen. Unfortunately, the University of Connecticut beat the Gators in the Final Four and killed the dream of a third national championship for Billy Donovan's boys.

2. Student attacks: The fall semester didn't start as expected when four attacks on female students were registered at the university. Apparently, a "white male in his late 20's to early 30's wearing an orange shirt, blue shorts and grey converse sneakers" was walking around campus battering females. The university increased security and the "Walk Safe Program" on campus was established. The suspect apparently was never found, and these attacks reminded some of the assaults in 1990 when five students were murdered.

3. Gators beat Georgia: After a horrible 42-13 loss to Missouri during Homecoming week, Gator fans were frightened about what the score would be against Georgia the following week. Thousands of fans drove to Jacksonville to watch this match with so much history between both schools, and those who stayed in Gainesville took over every bar and restaurant in the city. To the surprise of many, the Gators beat Georgia 38-20, and the entire school celebrated this victory the way it should've been honored.

4. Heavener Hall inauguration: The new business school building at the University of Florida was inaugurated on the corner of University Avenue and 13th Street. The building has so much swag, let me tell you, I would change my major just to have classes inside that establishment.

5. Jim McElwain becomes the new head coach: Gator fans were pretty angry that coach Muschamp stayed for the 2014 football season. They were even more annoyed when the Gators lost matches that they had in their hands against LSU, South Carolina and Florida State, and when they were drilled by Alabama 42 to 21. However, on November 17 Coach Muschamp stepped down and left room for a new head coach and opportunities for the football team. Then, on December 6, UF announced Jim McElwain as the new head coach and things started looking pretty promising for the Gator Nation next season.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
