26 Things I've Learned About Being 26

I turned 26 just a few weeks ago which, if your wondering, is just enough time to make me a certified expert on the subject.

Navigating the waters of adulthood has its challenges, but if you’re like me it's also been a wonderful learning experience that you wouldn’t trade for anything! Here are 26 thoughts on what life on the mid/late twenties border might be like for you so far:

1. You’re closer to being 30 than you are to being 20.

2. You just did the math to make sure that was really true, and had a slight moment of panic.

3. Almost all your favorite TV shows and movies have had a reboot.

4. You’re no longer wasting energy on toxic relationships (of any kind).

5. Not only do you have friends your age who are engaged or married, but you also have friends who are divorced.

6. You’ve legitimately wondered how many days of Taco Bell in a row is too many.

7. Food Network and HGTV have become your default background noise.

8. You’re embracing flexibility! Having a plan is great, but it’s okay to put the plan on the back burner and deal with whatever obstacles come your way.

9. You’ve learned the importance of having loving, supportive friends in your life, whether they're near or far.

10. You own many more plants than you ever have before.

11. However, you still haven't figured out how to grow a succulent without killing it.

12. You spend a lot of time interior-designing a house you haven't bought yet.

13. You know that it’s normal to have self-doubt. You acknowledge the validity of those feelings, and then do the things that scare you anyway.

14. Adult acne is a thing, apparently. It's cool, though. You own it.

15. You’re using your voice and your platform as an artist to speak out on behalf of causes that are important to you.

16. You’re now older than your parents were when they got married.

17. You’re taking more ownership of your self care needs.

18. There’s nothing quite like the joy you get from a productive grocery trip.

19. (Even though you still live on take-out more than you’d like to admit.)

20. Time is precious, and you’re remembering to spend it on the people and activities that make you happiest.

21. Things you wore in elementary school are now trendy again.

22. You belong to the demographic that is most targeted by advertisers.

23. Almost every time you visit your parents you return home with food.

24. You’re learning not to work for free. (This is especially difficult to remember as an artist, but hey, you’re trying!)

25. You probably eat more Lunchables than normal for someone your age.

26. You’ve realized that no one ever reaches a point when they have it “all figured out."

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
