TV Recommendations: Hulu Originals

In This Article:

Are we now in July and still in a pandemic? Do you feel like you've exhausted every option on Netflix and need to find a new show to watch? I've seen 14 Hulu Original shows over the years and have given each one a score and a short summary for you to pick from. (Update: I've tried my best to add trigger warnings to all the shows that I remember deal with sensitive topics at some point. I'm sure I forgot some though, so please make sure to look the show up if you're concerned before watching)

1. Marvel's Runaways

https://twitter.com/marvelsrunaways/status/1209896641131466752/photo/1

(Trigger Warning: anxiety-related disorders) A group of teenagers discover their powers while also discovering the evil plot their parents are a part of.

Number of seasons so far: 3

Score: 7/10- It's fun to watch at first, but after a while, I would get bored or lost in the plot.

2. Light as a Feather

https://twitter.com/DEADLINE/status/1175082326339899393/photo/1

One Halloween night, a group of teenage girls play a game of 'light as a feather stiff as a board' and face dire consequences afterwards.

Number of seasons so far: 2

Score: 9/10- I'd never watched a teen show like this before, and it managed to be creepy without going overboard.

3. The Act

https://twitter.com/decider/status/1122852163313709056/photo/1

Based on the real life story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother.

Number of seasons so far: 1

Score: 9/10- It's highly regarded for a reason. This story is bonkers though.

4. Looking for Alaska

https://twitter.com/AlaskaOnHulu/status/1187243592235880448/photo/1

(Trigger Warning: mentions of suicide) Based on the John Green novel of the same name, this is the story of a boarding school in Alabama in the early 2000s where two groups of teens from differing social circles clash.

Number of seasons so far: 1

Score: 10/10- I think this series brilliantly balanced the fun moments with the more serious ones, and the setting made it even more fun to watch.

5. Little Fires Everywhere

https://twitter.com/Variety_TV/status/1278360360274149376/photo/1

Another one based on a novel, this show follows two different takes on motherhood in the 90s and how they get interwoven with lots of family drama included.

Number of seasons so far: 1

Score: 9/10- This show drew me in more than expected. There's a reason it has so much star power in it.

6. Mrs. America

https://twitter.com/MrsAm_FXonHulu/status/1265819386616655873/photo/1

Inspired by true events, this series follows women from both sides of the aisle during the Equal Rights era of the 1970s.

Number of seasons so far: 1

Score: 10/10- Talk about a show relevant to 2020 while still taking place in the past. It's super informational without ever feeling dull.

7. All Night

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH8NzQVzN2I

After high school graduation, this show tackles a senior lock-in from numerous angles. (Also, sorry. This was the best picture I could find)

Number of season so far: 1

Score: 5/10- I watched this one a while ago, so it's not exactly fresh in my mind, but not a lot stood out about this teen show.

8. Shrill

https://twitter.com/DEADLINE/status/1198956138504450048/photo/1

This comedy follows the life of a journalist who is learning to love herself and handle the relationships around her.

Number of seasons so far: 2

Score: 6/10- Sometimes it's super funny, but other times, I found myself getting a little bored.

9. Four Weddings and a Funeral

https://twitter.com/4WeddingsOnHulu/status/1185631703911600128/photo/1

Riddled with every rom-com trope known to man, this show gives us a look at a group of friends and their love lives while living in England.

Number of seasons so far: 1

Score: 10/10- I absolutely adored this show and think it was expertly put together.

10. Dollface

https://twitter.com/DollfaceOnHulu/status/1203389420885311488/photo/1

After ending a long term relationship, our protagonist learns to reconnect with the friends she had neglected.

Number of seasons so far: 1

Score: 8/10- I ended up liking this show a lot. It's a great comedy with lots of familiar faces.

11. High Fidelity

https://twitter.com/decider/status/1278786044180258827/photo/1

Based on the movie of the same name, this show follows one woman as she reflects back on her past relationships while a killer soundtrack plays.

Number of seasons so far: 1

Score: 9/10- I know that all the remakes these days can get sort of annoying, but this show is mega entertaining and has a great cast of characters.

12. The Great

https://twitter.com/TheGreatHulu/status/1280214733732212736/photo/1

Very loosely based on the rise of power of Russia's Catherine the Great.

Number of seasons so far: 1

Score: 6/10- I liked the concept, but sometimes it got just a little too vulgar for me. You sort of have to watch at your own risk.

13. Love, Victor

https://twitter.com/nypost/status/1275931451771555845/photo/1

This teen series is a spinoff of the movie Love, Simon and follows another boy at the same high school discovering himself.

Number of seasons so far: 1

Score: 8/10- A cute teen show that tackles a lot of issues relevant today, but sometimes I felt like the jokes fell flat.

14. The Mindy Project

https://twitter.com/bryangreenberg/status/910220260762177537/photo/1

Technically, this show originated on another channel, but its last couple seasons were released on Hulu, so I'm counting it. This comedy follows Dr. Mindy Lahiri as she hilariously juggles her job and her love life.

Number of seasons so far: 6

Score: 7/10- It has a lot of seasons to go off of, and obviously, some are going to be better than others, but overall, a very humorous show.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
