The Truth About Birthday Wishes

It's time to stop wishing our lives away.

I recently celebrated my golden birthday -- 21. It's a moment I've anxiously awaited for as long as I can remember. Being the youngest of all of my friends didn't make waiting any easier, but it was so worth it; 21 was without a doubt the best birthday celebration I have ever had.

As I was surrounded by my friends with a birthday cake and candles in front of me, I dramatically told everyone to pause before they started singing so I could think of my wish -- only to realize how absolutely silly that was. About halfway through "Happy Birthday To You," I thought of the perfect one. I know you're not supposed to share your wish, because then it won't come true or whatever, but here it is:

My wish was that God's will be done in my life -- and that's why I'm comfortable sharing that wish with anyone who reads this article, because no matter who I tell, my wish will still come true.

God's will is greater than any wish I could think of. Sure I could wish for good grades, a well paying job, and a long, prosperous life ... but with God on my side, why would I wish for these things when I can pray for deliverance of what He knows I need versus what I think I want?

We spend so much of our lives wishing and not enough of our lives praying. From fairy tales, to magic genies, to 11:11 and everything in between, we put too much of our faith into myths and legends and pass up the opportunity we have to hand our desires over to the Lord and let him carve our perfect paths in the way that only He can.

I mean, honestly, think about it. How many times have you wished on a shooting star only to be disappointed? How many times have you blown out your candles and never given that wish a second thought because you knew it wouldn't come true? Compare all of those times to when you've put your trust in the Lord and watched Him faithfully deliver exactly what you needed at exactly the right time.

What it comes down to is that nobody knows your heart, your soul, your desires, your wants, or your needs better than the one who gave you eternal life. His faithfulness will never disappoint.

So the next time you see that star in the sky, or you catch the clock right at 11:11, or you blow out your birthday candle -- I challenge you to trade your wish for a prayer.

"Lord, I pray that Your will be done in my life, for there's nobody who knows me better than You."

Watch the way God shapes your life when you commit your faith to the one who holds the whole world in His hands and I promise it'll be more rewarding than any wish you could ever make.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
