On August 9th of 2019, famous rapper Trippie Redd released his newest album titles "!". The album is 38 minutes long with 14 songs originally but now contains only 13. I listened to this album the day it was released during a long drive and it kept me entertained for sure. Although I did enjoy the album, it did feel a little scattered.
The name "!" is almost like a tribute to deceased rapper Xxxtentacion who previously had an album title "?" The two rappers had a few fueds in the past but seemed to have a decent relationship. The two had collaborated on X's album "17" on the song "Fuck Love" which was a pretty big hit.
The album begins with the song "!" which has a big pop vibe to it. It's uptempo with a funky beat. It sounds like a classic song you'd hear on your favorite pop radio station.
A great summer song but it doesn't sound like the Trippie I am familiar with. As the album continues you realize this isn't Trippie's "hype" music which many of us are used to. It doesn't continue to feel like a pop album.
I'm not exactly sure what genre this album could truly fall under. I guess you could say it's a mix of hip hop / sad rap/pop. The one thing that is certain is the theme of feeling "lovesick".
Some may say this is due to his most recent relationship.A song I am actually a fan of is titled "Immortal" featuring The Game. This song is a classic cloudy, gloomy, but beautiful rap song. I think this song really makes up for other parts of the album.
There are several features on this album including Lil Baby, Lil Duke, Coi Leray, and The Game. Previously there was a song on the album with Playboi Carti but since the album's release, it has been taken down.
Some say it is because of the criticism from his fans and listeners saying Carti's verse was the best and only good part of the album. Of course, these are just rumors but it makes you think.
Overall I respect Trippie for trying to come up with an album that is new and out of his comfort zone, my only wish is that it was a little more "put together" if you will. The songs weren't half bad but I would've liked to hear the Trippe Redd that we all know and love. The concept is still interesting and I'm excited to see what Trippie Redd puts out in the future.
