A Tribute To Alan Rickman

The best Severus Snape we could have imagined.

A Tribute To Alan Rickman

On Jan. 14, 2016, the world lost an incredible actor, husband and friend. Alan Rickman passed away at the age 69 from cancer. Sources said that friends and family surrounded Rickman when he passed.

Rickman was a phenomenal actor during his life. He is known mostly for his roles in “Harry Potter,” “Die Hard,” “Love Actually” and “Alice in Wonderland”. Rickman played the infamous Severus Snape in “Harry Potter,” Harry, the guy we all hated, in “Love Actually,” the blue caterpillar in “Alice in Wonderland” and Hans Gruber in “Die Hard”.

Although he didn’t have kids, Rickman wed sweetheart Rima Horton in 2012. The two were together for 40 years before they secretly wed in New York. Rickman stated, "It was great because no one was there. After, we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and ate lunch."

Rickman was a phenomenal actor making anyone love and hate his character at the same time. Everyone hated his character in “Love Actually,” but Rickman made it so easy to love him at the same time. The blue caterpillar he played in “Alice” was pretty cool, although I questioned some of the lines he had. Then there’s the famous character everyone will remember Rickman by—Severus Snape.

When “Harry Potter” began, JK Rowling made it so easy to hate Snape. He was the evil character from the beginning, but Rickman was so great at bringing Snape to life and making you hate him less. When Snape died, it was depressing because he had spent his entire life trying to help Harry. Rickman is one of the reasons that the “Harry Potter” series means so much to me. He makes Snape so relatable instead of hating him.

The movie industry definitely won’t be the same without Rickman. Many of his co-stars have shared messages of mourning and love. Reading them makes it even sadder, but everyone knows how special it was to work with Rickman. “Harry Potter” stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and James Phelps have shared their thoughts and memories with Rickman. Rowling has also shared her thoughts stating, “There are no words to express how shocked and devastated I feel.”

Fans at Universal Studios Orlando raised their wands Thursday in memory of the great Slytherin Rickman portrayed. It was the most touching picture I’ve seen in a long time and it will give you goosebumps. The dedication fans have is astounding and there’s nothing quite like it in the world.

Watching any of Rickman’s movies from now on will be so odd considering that he’s passed. It will be odd not seeing him in another movie for the rest of time.

To Rickman: Thank you for making us fall in love with all of your characters. You've made most, if not all, of them so relatable and no one could replace you.

We raise our wands to you, Rickman. You’ll be in our hearts. Always.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
