Recently, the television show '13 Reason Why,' based on the book by Jay Asher, premiered on Netflix. The show tells the story of Hannah Baker, a teen who recently committed suicide. She tells her story on a set of tapes, explaining how those around her let her down and hurt her. A lot of people in the tapes may have done something they didn't see as significant or had idea it would hurt her so much.
'13 Reasons Why' has left an important message of taking the time to think about the affect you leave on people. You may not see someone hurting. You might be missing the signs. You may not see how much you hurt someone. A major quote from the book is, "No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet we push it just the same."
The point is, think about how your words and actions might affect someone. A little comment you may think is a joke, could really hurt someone. Or taking the time to show a simple act of kindness could save someone and make them feel a million times better.
The book an television show have left me thinking a lot about making people know how loved and worthy they are. Sure, we all have our differences with people, but everybody deserves to feel loved and welcomed. Nobody deserves to be torn down and to feel not good enough.
Simply put, treat people the way you want to be treated. Always treat people with love and kindness. If someone is receiving so much love and positivity they will keep it going and keep spreading it in return. Take the time to consider someone else's feelings, so they will in return consider yours. Be kind in order to receive kindness. You never know what someone is going through, a simple act of kindness and treating someone with love could change everything.
