Going abroad can be scary, especially if it's for the first time. Long airplane rides, hours in an airport, constantly worrying about your passport... traveling is a lot to handle. Here are some things you all should remember this week while you're away. And don't forget to have fun!
1. Take lots of pictures if you can.
And not just selfies. Take candids of any other friends who may be with you. Let them take candids of you. Photograph the scenery, the people and the food. This is a great experience that you'll remember for the rest of your life.
2. Try as much food as you can get your hands on.
Sure, some places like the UK may not have very different kinds of food, but there's always something new to try. And if you're in a country that's completely different from yours — eat your way through it.
3. Don't lose your passport!
This is incredibly important. While you're out and having fun, make sure your passport is somewhere safe and away from anyone who may try to take it from you. Getting back can be difficult if you don't have it.
4. Over-packing is just as bad as not packing enough.
Packing can be a daunting task that takes hours and comes paired with a lot of stress. Remember that this trip is more about the experience than how you look. Too many clothes can weigh you down, and no one will judge if you wear the same pair of jeans twice.
5. Make sure you have an adapter for your electronics.
You may not be on your phone 24/7, but having a dead cellphone or not being able to straighten your hair may be tricky.
6. Don't over-spend when it comes to money.
Our currency isn't the same as other countries, so be careful when it comes to how much money you actually have. Prices may be different too, and you may not be able to simply get more money like you can in the States.
7. Learn as much as you can about the culture of the country you're going to visit.
Other countries have very different customs than we do, so it is important to read up on how they live as much as you can. Having access to emergency numbers and other people in your group in case you get separated is important too.
8. Drink lots of water and stay cool.
This is especially important if you're going to a country with a warmer climate. You may be doing a lot of walking and touring, so staying hydrated is important.
9. If you can, find a buddy to travel with.
Spending all of your time in a big group can be exhausting, so pick one or two people you can tour with. A smaller group is easier to keep in contact with and makes communication easier.
10. Stay as safe as possible.
Just like you wouldn't get into a car with a stranger at home, do not trust every new person you meet. You may fear coming off as rude or stuck up, but being safe is better than being sorry.
