5 Reasons Traveling IS Good For You
Personal

I'll admit, I'm biased when it comes to travel - I work in the hospitality industry, hotels specifically, so it has a special place in my heart. However, traveling isn't just something fun and exciting, there's so much more it can bring to you. Here's five reasons why you should explore the world around you.

You become culturally competent

Whether you travel across the globe or within the country, traveling opens you up to a world of people you've never met before.

By exploring, you become immersed in the culture where you're at, allowing yourself to become open-minded to the different ways people live their life. This helps you keep an open mind towards everyone you meet.

Creating memories

Personal

One of my favorite parts of traveling is the memories I make with the people I'm with. Souvenir keychains can't compare to all the experiences I can share with loved ones. Plus travel stories are a great flex on all your friends and family!

Employers love to see it

I know, the dreaded "employers love this on your resume" response. But it is true. Employers do take into consideration your travel experience when it comes to searching through job applicants.

What this shows them is your ability to navigate through challenges, keep an open mind about people, and your flexibility for change. Employers even say it improves confidence and independent thinking in their employees.

Food

I love food! One of the best parts of traveling is getting to experience an area's food. As a Springfield, MO native, cashew chicken can only go so far for a person. It also pushes you out of your comfort zone a little. I remember being in Colorado and eating elk meat for the first time.

As someone conditioned to only beef and chicken, it was a new experience for me (and it was delicious!) Maybe anyone can make jambalaya, but it isn't the same if it's not in Louisiana.

You become a better person

Traveling allows you to not only explore where you are at but to explore within yourself. You are pushed out of your comfort zone by trying something new. In doing so, traveling builds your confidence.

You are forced to navigate an area you're unfamiliar with, giving you the skills you need to ask for help and learn on your own. Traveling can challenge you, and you become a better version of you after it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
