You’re young and you have big plans ... plans that unfortunately cost you a lot more than your minimum wage summer job can afford. Whether you just came back from studying abroad or your past semester was filled with adventure, that little travel bug is still crawling into your system. You’re trying every possible way to fill those Netflix and popcorn weekends with crazy summertime experiences without going over your budget.
Here are some tips to keep your soul, and wallet, happy.
1. Discover the beauty of Groupon.
Most people might not realize this but this website has some awesome deals for hotels, places to visit, eat and travel to — some even half off! If you sign up, they send regular emails about what events and promotions are going on during that week, not to mention discounted trips to beautiful international destinations. Cancun is calling.
2. Learn to love camping.
Okay, I know this isn't the ideal summer adventure (mountain lions, anyone?), and I am sorry it isn’t Cancun, but there are some beautiful campgrounds all around Upstate New York for very cheap — I’m talking $30 A DAY. Grab your closet friends, a few tents, saddle up in the car and enjoy mother nature!
3. Start collecting your coins.
You know all that loose change shoved in the seats of your car and couch that no one ever touches? Well, you’d be surprised how much all those tiny pieces of metals can add up to. First, clean your car and your room. Then take whatever you have collected and throw them into a jar or cup. As you accumulate more, go to the bank and cash them in. Can't afford to fill your tank up? You'll be amazed at how far $17 worth of quarters can get you.
4. Use your connections.
That coworker of yours has a timeshare in California? You better believe you will be on your best behavior during your next shift with them, maybe even sweeten them up with a few breakfast donuts. But don't be greedy! Forcing your way into other peoples benefits does not bode well for your reputation around the office. Offer them days off, or your swimming pool. Can't say no to that.
It is very easy to get caught up in the fuss of wanting to do everything possible this summer. There are just so many places to go, so many faces to see, so many memories to make! Take your time, do the research and enjoy the simplicity of the resources that are out there.
Happy traveling!
