Tori Kelly Should Have Won Best New Artist

And my dismay upon hearing the winner.

Tori Kelly Should Have Won Best New Artist

While watching the Grammys last week, I was blown away by all of the live talent. I was very hopeful for this year’s Best New Artist award because a favorite new artist of mine was up for the award. That favorite new artist is Tori Kelly.

Tori Kelly did an amazing acoustic duet with James Bay live during the 2016 Grammys. They both sang while playing on their acoustic guitars. Tori belted out amazing high notes with tons of power and grace moving between those hard notes. The crowds gave them both a standing ovation and I was sure, without a doubt, that I was looking at the 2016 Best New Artist, Tori Kelly.

The award had not even been announced for best new artist, but I had it set in my mind that Tori Kelly deserved the title. I was enjoying the rest of the performances, but really just waiting for them to announce the Best New Artist award.

The moment had arrived, and Sam Smith approached the stage to announce this year’s Best New Artist. Sam Smith had won this award last year, and he was looking much different in his appearance this year compared to last. I was a little thrown off by his slim look and facial hair, but nonetheless, I was anxious to hear Tori Kelly’s name announced as the 2016 Grammy Award Winner for Best New Artist. I just knew that she was going to get it.

So Sam Smith opens the envelope, and to my dismay, he announced that Meghan Trainor had won the award. My heart nearly dropped to the floor. My poor Tori! I was hoping, wishing, and waiting for Tori Kelly’s name to be called, and it, sadly, was not.

I knew in my heart that she deserved it, and I wanted it to be her on the stage accepting the award and not Meghan Trainor. No doubt, Meghan had some hits this year, but talentwise, clearly Tori Kelly has the better pipes. What made it even worse was the terrible acceptance speech from Meghan Trainor, which really put me off.

Meghan was very emotional and was whimpering like a baby. She was speaking in a high pitched voice as she held back her tears and thanked the people that got her that award. She was making weird faces and talking in such an odd voice. It really just all irritated me that much more.

So I watched the rest of the Grammys, but in the back of my mind, I was just thinking of next year. Thinking of all the possibilities that await Tori Kelly and all of the future Grammys she will win. Tori Kelly is an amazing artist and it is a true shame that she did not receive the 2016 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
