The 2016 Oscars was an emotional roller coaster months before anyone stepped onto the red carpet. From sadness about the passing of beloved actors such as Alan Rickman to renewed hope for Leonardo DiCaprio to controversy about the lack of diversity, it was sure to be a night to remember. And it did not disappoint. Here are the 10 most memorable moments from the 88th Academy Awards.
10. When Jack Black was featured in the Black History Month Minute.
As expected, a hot topic of the night was the predominance of white nominees. The effectiveness and funniness of host Chris Rock's intro monologue and other jokes throughout the night will be debated, I'm sure, but one of the best bits was the tease to Oscar-snub Will Smith and then featuring Jack Black.
9. When Girl Scouts sold cookies to the audience.
Chris Rock won Dad of the Year when he brought his daughter's Girl Scouts troupe into the theater to sell boxes of cookies. I think it's safe to say they're going to win this year.
8. Kevin Hart's suit.
And when he acknowledged the "sparkly things" on it.
7. The acceptance speech for "Inside Out".
After winning Best Animated Feature, director Pete Docter had an inspiring message for the younger viewers: “Anyone out there who’s in junior high, high school, working it out, suffering. There are days you’re gonna feel sad, you’re gonna feel angry, you’re gonna be scared. That’s nothing you can choose, but you can make stuff. Make films. Draw. Write. It’ll make a world of difference.”
6. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe's presentation bit.
Early on in the night, Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe presented the Best Adapted Screenplay award and came away as among the funniest presenters of the night. Watch it here.
5. Buzz and Woody.
While several fictional characters made appearances tonight, the best appearance was Buzz Lightyear and Woody. In honor of the 20th anniversary of "Toy Story," the beloved duo presented the Best Animated Feature category with a little help from everyone's favorite aliens.
4. Louis C.K.'s presentation.
After hilariously introducing the Short Documentary award, comedian Louis C.K. rounded off his time on stage with a nod to the fact that "Mad Max: Fury Road" seemed to have won every award thus far (six out of their 10 nominations). His wit has many clamoring for him to be the next host.
3. Lady Gaga's performance of "Til It Happens To You".
Nominated for Best Original Song, "Til It Happens To You" was created for "The Hunting Ground," a documentary about sexual abuse on college campuses. Although the song didn't win an award, Lady Gaga's performance, which ended with survivors of sexual abuse joining her on stage, was haunting and beautiful. Watch the performance here.2. When Best Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu refused to get off the stage.
Alejandro G. Iñárritu won Best Director for "The Revenant," and it seemed he was a little too used to being in charge. After a minute or so of his acceptance speech, the orchestra began playing to signal the end of his time. And kept playing and kept playing, basically just giving Iñárritu's speech an epic soundtrack. Finally, they gave up and stopped playing music. Iñárritu finished shortly after. He probably deserved it though — it's the first time in over 50 years a director has won two years in a row (Iñárritu won last year for "Birdman").
1. Kate Winslet when Leo finally won.
Okay. We all saw it coming, but it was still exciting. Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar. Since 1993, DiCaprio has been nominated for five Oscars (and arguably snubbed for many more), but that all ended Sunday night with his award for Best Leading Actor in "The Revenant." What made it even more perfect was longtime friend Kate Winslet's reaction as she watches, near tears, as he makes a long-awaited acceptance speech (which the Academy didn't dare cut off). Watch it here. What did you think? Did you have other favorite moments? Upset by any awards? Did you think Leo deserved it?
