On December 13th, 2015, Ed Sheeran announced a hiatus from Social Media.
On December 13th, 2016, exactly one year after the announced hiatus, Sheeran’s social media accounts went blue - an indication that something was coming.
On January 1st, 2017, Sheeran tweeted two words “Hello 2017,” with a nine second video of himself holding up a sign saying “new music coming Friday” - January 6th, 2017. Two singles were released that day: ‘Castle on the Hill’ and ‘Shape of You.’
On January 12th, 2017, Sheeran released the tracklist for his third studio album - Divide - as well as its release date: March 3rd, 2017.
Stating that, “[it is] the best thing [he has] made thus far,” here are my Top Three Ed Sheeran Songs From ‘Divide.’1. Happier:
If you’ve ever been in a friendship, or relationship, that ended in a not-so-good way, then this song will help you Let It Go. This one is about being Happier for the people in your past. It is about knowing that it is okay if things didn’t work out because better things will soon follow. As Sheeran said, it is about “looking back on a failed relationship with an original twist." Leave it to Sheeran to have a positive outlook on any and every situation.
2. Save Myself:
As someone who constantly worries and provides support to everyone, but herself, this song struck something in me: the importance of self-care. Sheeran sings, “before I save someone else, I’ve got to save myself.” In other words, it is more than okay to focus on yourself once in awhile. In fact, it is necessary to do so. I like to listen to this song when I am in need of this reminder. It is important to make yourself a priority and this song allows me to do just that.
1. Supermarket Flowers:
This one is quite touching and is most definitely going to bring a tear or two to your eyes. Written from the perspective of his mother, this song is about the passing of Grandma Sheeran, who passed away whilst Ed was finishing up with Divide. This song was written as a tribute to her. As someone who has lost a special person that is near and dear to her, I can relate to the pain that is evident in the songs lyrics. It is, without a doubt, a song that is worth a thousand words.
.... Isn’t it amazing what a one year hiatus can bring?!
