Rocking the blue carpet like a runway

Top Five Trends From The Teen Choice Awards

If you're anything like me, maybe you skim through some clips from awards shows, read the highlights on BuzzFeed, and check out your favorite performances later. However, the fashion is something you need to check out immediately. There were so many great trends to choose from at this year's Teen Choice Awards, and I've picked out some of my favorites to get you inspired to refresh your wardrobe.

1. Black and white.

So many stars rocked the black and white look, including Ellen and Portia. They showed how to rock a classic color duo for both day and for night. Shay Mitchell, Keke Palmer, Jordin Sparks, Peyton and Spencer List, and Zendaya also rocked patterned black and white looks that looked chic and modern. The key to rocking black and white is simply accessorize and mix it up. Adding a bright color to your otherwise neutral look is a good start; then try to mix patterns, textures, and lengths within your outfit.

2. Cut outs.

We saw lots of different cutouts on the blue carpet this year, including Lucy Hale's jaw dropping look you see above. There were fishnet details, side cutouts, plunging necklines, collarbone exposures, and of course lots of crop tops. The key to this look is making your standout piece take center stage. Hale did this by keeping her accessories neutral and slicking back her hair. In Peyton List's look she rocked a high ponytail to draw attention to her cut out top; Grace Helbig posed in just the right way to show off her cutouts; Keke Palmer brushed her hair to one side, and many others simply didn't wear jewelry that would compete with their dresses. To sum up, to rock a cutout look you should tailor your hair style and accessories to show them off.

3. Sunset colors.

Been spending a lot of time at the beach? Want to show off your tan? Then try on some shades of pink, yellow, red, and orange. Pair a bright statement piece, like Grace's, with neutral accessories and let it speak for itself. Sarah Hyland, Cat Deeley, Robyn Lawley, Bella Thorne, Katie Stevens, Italia Ricci all rocked some lovely sunset hues as well with lace detailing, cut outs, and lovely florals you should check out.

4. Florals.

Sabrina and Sarah Carpenter along with Lea Michele, Jillian Rose Reed, Jordana Brewster, Robyn Lawley, and many others rocked florals on the blue carpet. Some rocked dark florals paired with moody makeup, some chose pastel hues, some wore sexy and sheer florals, and some rocked lace with floral prints peeking through. No matter how you rock this trend the key is to make it your own. You can rock a floral blazer, a jumpsuit, dress or your favorite pair of pants either way mix it up and have fun with your accessories and makeup.

5. Colored hair.

Both Britney Spears and Rita Ora rocked colorful hair looks on the Teen Choice blue carpet and looked great doing it. If you love their look I would recommend starting small and trying out hair chalk or color you can wash out to test out what color you may want in your hair. Once you bleach your hair and dye it there are not a lot of safe ways to reverse the process so know what you want and consult a stylist.

Happy back to school shopping, fashionistas!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
