There is no shortage of Christmas movies to watch once the holidays roll around. Although the movies are subject to differences in opinion, there are some movies that I am drawn to watch every year around Christmas time. I haven't seen "Miracle on 34th Street" or "White Christmas," but I will get around to that. From the movies I have seen (most of them nearly 10 times over), I can form a well-rounded opinion on the best of the season. Here are the top five Christmas movies. These are the ones I will continue to watch every year at this time.
1. "The Santa Clause(s)"
There are three of The Santa Clause movies, all of which are great. They include child and adult humor (all appropriate), and they make Christmas a little more special and relatable with an average-Joe turning into Santa Claus when the old Santa Claus falls off of his roof. The movies go through the life of Scott Calvin (a.k.a. Santa Claus) and what obstacles he has to overcome to keep being Santa.
2. "How the Grinch Stole Christmas"
The Jim Carrey, real-life version. It's a live take on the cartoon version with a bit more backstory and adventure. This movie shows the joyful and unforgettable reason for the season (not Jesus, unfortunately). The Grinch gives the citizens of Whoville a hard time about Christmas only to be changed from the inside out by the love in the heart of a little girl.
3. "The Polar Express"
My family watches this movie every year around Christmas time and it is by far one of my favorites (mostly due to the fact that they dedicate an entire song to hot chocolate). It has great humor and is a heart-warming movie for children and adults alike. Also, Tom Hanks plays six parts in this movie (the Hero Boy, his father, the Conductor, the Hobo, Scrooge, and Santa Claus). If that isn't enough to persuade someone to watch it, I don't know what is.
4. "Holiday Inn"
So, this one was made in 1942, and that was almost a deal-breaker for me. I have this weird preference to watch movies with color because black and white films gives off this old-timey and boring feel, but most of the time, they shock me. This one definitely did. This movie has Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby in it. The story is about this famous singer, Jim Hardy (Bing Crosby), and his dancing friend, Ted Hanover (Fred Astaire), fighting for the same girl. Jim's fiance leaves him for Ted, Jim's best friend. Jim then builds the Holiday Inn, open only on holidays, and invites new talent to perform at his inn. He falls in love with a singing, dancing girl, only to have Ted try and steal her away too. The amount of drama and romance is just enough to keep you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see who this young, talented girl chooses to be with.
5. "A Christmas Carol"
This is also a Jim Carrey movie. The man is a great actor and does cartoon takes very well. This take on Charles Dickens' novel is intense, adventurous and funny. Jim Carrey plays Scrooge, and all three ghosts in the movie. Scrooge is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future in order to show him the wrong in his life, especially around the Christmas season, so he can fix it and become a happier man. The movie can be watched as a family. There is just enough humor and seriousness in there to keep everybody entertained.
