This last week was the week when E3 — a video game convention — happened, and with E3 came a plethora of announcements from various companies about what they were producing. There was so much that was announced that I was thrilled about, and had trouble picking which I was most looking forward to, but I’m going to try to now.
1. "The Last Guardian."
This is one that fans were ecstatic about. “The Last Guardian” is a game we’ve been hearing about since E3 in 2009 with very little press or concrete release dates to go off of. We still don’t know too much about it other than the fact that it has stunning graphics and it features a young boy covered in tattoos running among a set of ruins with what can be assumed to be some sort of winged, dog-like creature.
It looks a lot like what I expect a dungeon crawler to look like. For those who don’t know, a dungeon crawler game usually involves someone going through areas (dungeons), usually dealing with puzzles and fights along the way. With all the preparation that has been taken for this game, I’m anticipating a fantastic adventure through “The Last Guardian,” which comes out Oct. 26 of this year.
2. “NieR: Automata.”
This is a game I never saw coming. I’d never played the original “NieR” that came out for Xbox 360 and PS3 during April 2010, but I’ve heard really good things about it. One thing that I have heard that is so remarkable about the game is the music, and I can see that with the trailer that we got for “NieR: Automata.”
It seems to be about two automata who venture in a world where humans are either extinct or much less prevalent than they used to be. The gameplay that I have seen for this game so far looks amazing and very intense, which will make the gamer inside all of us very happy. There is no specific date set for release; all we know of this game is that it is supposed to come out early 2017.
3. "Persona 5."
I have been waiting for this game for a really long time, which is a trend I’m seeing with all of these games I've become so excited about. The “Persona” series is a series of JRPGs — Japanese role playing games — that take place in a contemporary Japanese setting and usually deal with the supernatural, whether it's solving a murder mystery that involves jumping into a TV to fight demonic creatures referred to as “shadows” like in “Persona 4,” or attempting to save the world from the Grim Reaper trying to destroy the world with the moon like in “Persona 3.”
While a lot of news has been said about this game, we haven’t gotten any trailers with English in it, which made it difficult for me to tell what was going on when trailers were being released within the past few months. While I knew the game was going to be very pretty and have stellar graphics, the content evaded me for the longest time. With the most recent trailer released at E3, we finally know about our beloved “Persona 5,” which comes out Feb. 14, 2017.
4. "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."
The next game I want to talk about is one that has been hyped throughout E3, not just because it is a “Zelda” game, but because it’s the only game that Nintendo featured this year, which means that they’re incredibly serious about this game doing well. Of all the trailers I’ve seen for games this E3, this one might take the cake for one of the most breathtaking.
The thing that’s being marketed about this game right now is that it has a very “open world,” which refers to how accessible the world of the game is. Usually, in a video game that is “closed world,” you travel upon a linear path with set goals and missions that you must complete. The appeal of the open world that “Breath of the Wild” gives us is that you can do pretty much whatever you want on your own time. You might remember a little game known as “Skyrim,” which possesses one of the most renowned open worlds to date. Unfortunately, we don’t have a release date on this game yet, so we’ll just have to wait it out until something comes of it.
5. "Final Fantasy XV."
This game has been teasing the “Final Fantasy” lovers of the world for far too long, and finally Square Enix is giving us what we want. This game was announced under the title of “Final Fantasy Versus XIII” back in 2006. We’ve waited for 10 years now and finally we’re getting what’s been shown to us for so long.
The game is set in a modern-fantasy setting that seems to be very similar to Earth, and stars a young man of royal descent and his three pals as they travel around the world in cars, boats, car-planes, and boat-planes. While they’ve been showing this traveling feature a lot, they’ve shown a lot about the fighting system, which is very different from a traditional “Final Fantasy” game that usually goes on a turn-based system, meaning players fight turn by turn against their enemies. Instead, we have a real-time system, which means we’ll be able to make the characters move around and fight at our own discretion. This game comes out Sept. 30 of this year.
These are the five games I’m most stoked about that were talked about at E3 this year. How about you?
