Amidst the various aspects that can make summer great, there is one that I’ve always found to be the icing on that cake -- music.
I don’t particularly listen to songs about the summertime, but I do like songs that embody the spirit of summer, cheerful with a positive vibe. I’ve compiled an informal list of some of my favorite songs, and I hope you discover a couple of new tunes. These aren’t ranked, because I thoroughly enjoy them all.
Play the songs you love, and let the good times roll.
1. Talk About by The Lonely Biscuits
One of my favorite songs in general, but the chorus has a fun melody, and poses a question we’ve all probably asked ourselves.
2. Twist and Shout by The Beatles
Remember how much fun Ferris Bueller had with this song? Play it loud and have your own day off.
3. Can’t Stop by Red Hot Chili Peppers
They’re “addicted to the shindig," and I’m addicted to how catchy this song can be.
4. Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It by Will Smith
This song is the reason the word jiggy is in the dictionary and the reason you need to get up to start dancing.
5. Good Day by DNCE
The day will most certainly be a good day if you start it by listening to this tune -- not a bad mantra either.
6. Fun, Fun, Fun by The Beach Boys
Known as an oldie, but a classic. Well, listen to this tune, and you’ll have fun, fun, fun until daddy takes your T-Bird away.
7. Dancing In the Street by Mick Jagger & David Bowie
Though it may be dancing in the street, there will still be plenty of rug to cut.
8. House Is A Rockin’ by Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
Just because nobody is knocking, doesn’t mean there can’t be a party.
9. Aaron’s Party by Aaron Carter
I’m not saying to throw a house party while the parents are away, but I’m also not saying to not throw a house party while the parents are away.
10. Island in the Sun by Weezer
Toss a small umbrella in your drink and kick back for awhile. Take a load off for crying out loud!
11. Smoke by Florida Georgia Line
If you’re going to a bonfire, this may be a song that needs to be played on one of those bluetooth speakers.
12. Hey Now Now by Swirl 360
You may not know this song, but it’s got an amusing amount of positivity blended in.
13. Centerfield by John Fogerty
Summer is baseball season, and this song makes me want a bag of peanuts, and a questionable hot dog.
14. Rockaway Beach by The Ramones
Chew out a rhythm on your bubble gum, and enjoy the sunshine.
15. Floats My Boat by Aer
Maybe don’t play this song in front of children -- but hey, do what floats your boat.
16. Dance the Night Away -by Van Halen
It doesn’t just have to be the night that is danced away.
17. Peace of Mind by Boston
Peace, it is something we all enjoy and makes relaxation much more enjoyable.
18. Power of Love by Huey Lewis & The News
Love is a curious thing, and it goes hand-in-hand with summer.
19. Sweet Child O’Mine by Guns N’ Roses
Repeated apostrophes aside, let this song take you away to that special place.
20. Walkin’ On the Sun by Smash Mouth
Don’t delay, turn up the volume, and let Smash Mouth rejuvenate your day.
21. Never Let You Go by Third Eye Blind
Whether it is a friend or a significant other, there is no reason they can’t enjoy the summer right along side of you.
22. Someday by Sugar Ray
It wouldn’t be summer without time traveling back to the 90's.
23. Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet
You don’t have to be wasting away in Margaritaville to sip a cold drink and put your feet up.
24. Start Me Up by The Rolling Stones
If they start you up, I hope you don’t stop -- live it up.
25. Marvin Gaye by Charlie Puth
Wait, or is the song Charlie Puth by Marvin Gaye?
26. Jump by Kriss Kross
It’s wiggity wiggity wiggity whack, fam.
27. The Real Slim Shady by Eminem
Bleach blonde hair and plain white t-shirt is all you need -- and double check your onion rings.
28. No Such Thing by John Mayer
Scream at the top of your lungs because there is no such thing as the real world when you’re in paradise.
29. Tubthumping by Chumbawamba
Need I say more?
30. One More Night by Maroon 5
Repeat this once per night.
31. Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey
You don’t have to be a small town girl to belt out the final chorus of this classic.
32. Sky is the Limit by Rebelution
The sky is the limit when you’re out living life.
33. Tighten Up by The Black Keys
Ironically, this is the time to loosen up.
34. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
It doesn’t have anything to do with summer, but aren’t sing-alongs with friends always a good time?
35. End of the Summer by Theory of a Deadman
Don’t let the band name fool you, it’s actually a pretty good song and a sentimental way to cap off a summer.
Overall, summer is the season to find some time to cut loose and enjoy yourself in whatever capacity that may be. Hopefully you can find some enjoyment from some of these songs because I know I sure do.
