10 Top UT Greek Philanthropy Events

The Greek community at UT puts on hundreds of philanthropy events, profit-shares and fundraisers throughout each year, raising hundreds of thousands for charity. They tend to vary greatly in size and success, with most changing from year to year. However, there are some classics that just never seem to fade, growing annually in success and contribution. In no particular order, my list of the top 10 is below:

1. Dessert with DG

That's $5 for all-you-can-eat desserts. What more could you want from a philanthropy event? This year Delta Gamma indulged in root beer floats, Dunkin' Donuts, brownies and the always-delicious Tiff’s Treats. With live music and stringed lights over their backyard pool, it was the perfect setting to work on that Freshman 15.

2. Mac & Phis

Three words: mac and cheese. For this brand new event, Alpha Phi went all out and created a mac and cheese bar right in their house. It had two types of mac and cheese, with an assortment of cheeses and all different kinds of toppings.

3. Pike Pancakes

There is something about puns and food that just works for philanthropy events. There were stacks upon stacks of pancakes at the Pike house to support the Dell Children’s Medical Center last year.

4. Greek Get Down

Alpha Epsilon Phi started a new tradition this year by hosting the first annual Greek Get Down! Thirteen sororities competed with wildly entertaining, original dance routines and the top three finishers got money for their own philanthropies. The rest of the proceeds benefited AEPHI’s philanthropy, the Elizabeth Glasier Pediatric Aids foundation.

5. ZBTipoff

Whether people play or watch, everyone has a good time at ZBTipoff. This event brings the Greek community together for some friendly basketball and pool volleyball tournaments. All the proceeds go to the Community First! Village.

6. Sigma Chi's Derby Days

Derby Days with Sigma Chi is a week-long event in which sorority members participate in all different activities to earn points and raise money. The week culminates in a big celebration on the last day with live music, food and competition.

7. Pizza Pie with Alpha Chi

Some would call this one a dream come true. It gets participants endless pizza for just $3.

8. Taco Xi

There’s no better pregame for a Halloween night than tacos at Alpha Xi Delta. For $5, participants get unlimited tacos. The event benefits Autism Speaks.

9. ZBT Pink-Out Rave

In honor of October breast cancer awareness month, ZBT combines music, rave lights and pink clothes to create a legendary night for philanthropy. Proceeds from this event benefit breast cancer organizations.

10. Sigma Chi Fight Night

Texas Fight Night brings together boxing, food and music to create a huge philanthropy event that everyone loves.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
