I read 17 books in 2017, and I wanted to share my top 10 of that year!
1. "Turtles All the Way Down" by John Green
Aza and her best friend Daisy investigate the mystery of runaway billionaire Russell Pickett, mainly because of the $100,000 reward. Aza is struggling with mental issues while trying to be the best student, friend, and daughter she can be. She describes her thoughts as a “spiral."
2. "An Invisible Thread" by Alex Tresniowski and Laura Schroff
This biography/autobiography is about Laura Schroff, an advertising sales representative in Manhattan, and her friendship with a homeless 11-year-old boy. It all started with lunch at McDonalds, which became a weekly occurrence and led to an amazing 30-year friendship.
3. "The Girl on the Train" by Paula Hawkins
Rachel, who takes the same commuter train every morning, pays close attention to every detail of the ride. She begins to feel as if she knows the people who live in one of the houses. She calls them “Jess and Jason,” and imagines their perfect life together. Rachel sees something interesting as the train passes their house, and she is given the opportunity to become a part of their lives.
4. "Everything, Everything" by Nicola Yoon
This book is written from the first-person perspective of Maddy, a teenager who is essentially allergic to the world and therefore unable to leave her house. She only ever sees her mom and her nurse Carla, until a boy named Olly moves in next door, and Maddy seeks adventure.
5. "Never Always Sometimes" by Adi Alsaid
High school best friends Dave and Julia make a "Never List" of everything they vowed to never do, in an effort to avoid being cliché high school kids. Dave has been in love with Julia for a long time, and she eventually suggests completing every "Never" on the list, so he goes along. The pair learns that they were missing out on high school and on true love by sticking to the Never List.
6. "Someone Like You" by Sarah Dessen
Halley feels like she is always following behind her best friend Scarlett, until Scarlett’s boyfriend dies in a motorcycle accident and Scarlett discovers that she is having his baby. Scarlett needs Halley’s help for the first time, so their friendship grows and changes both of their lives.
7. "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn
In North Carthage, Missouri, Nick and Amy Dunne are celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary when Amy disappears. Nick is put under great pressure by the police, media, his sister, and Amy’s parents as they try to uncover if he is responsible.
8. "Yes Please" by Amy Poehler
This memoir is Poehler’s first book, and is a compilation of personal stories from throughout her life and career. It includes advice, humor, sex, love, and more.
9. "The Memory Book" by Lara Avery
Sammie, a strong-willed high school student planning to graduate at the top of her class and move away, is diagnosed with a genetic disorder that will make her memory deteriorate. She created the "Memory Book," notes written to Sammie's future self to help her remember. These notes include Sammie's first date and her relationship with her childhood best friend.
10. "Extraordinary Means" by Robyn Schneider
Lane is sent to Latham House, a boarding school for sick kids, and he thinks it will be the worst thing in his life. He then meets Sadie and her friends, the troublemakers of Latham House. This changes his mind and makes him begin to reevaluate his life and his illness.
