Burberry is known as a luxury British fashion house that was established in 1856 by Thomas Burberry, who was 21 years old at the time. He opened his first store in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. By 1870 Burberry was known as an ‘emporium,' with its main focus being the development of outdoor wear.
In 1879 he created the fabric that would completely change the direction of his brand. He invented gabardine, a breathable fabric made from using an innovative process where the yarn used was waterproofed before weaving. The patent for this durable and water-resistant fabric was taken out in 1888. The creation of the trench coat was mostly done for the First World War but became very popular after this, the brand still being known for it to this day.
Believe it or not Burberry dressed both Captain Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole, and Ernest Shackleton, the first explorer to cross the Antarctic continent from coast to coast. Burberry also sponsored an air race that reached the fastest flying time to Cape Town from London in 1937.
The brand has registered it's equestrian knight logo and check patterned as trademarks and they are now what identifies Burberry.The appeal of the brand, to this day, is of a sense of classiness; chic and very high-end.
