A Virginia delegate that spoke to my College Republican organization said, “You guys, as college Republicans, have real courage to stand up for what you believe in, in a place where mostly everyone is against you.” This quote is so true and really made me think.
I grew up in a largely Republican county and I knew that coming to college would be a culture shock because college campuses are notorious for being liberal. But it seems that everywhere is becoming liberal, especially on the internet. Having social media and being on a college campus is a real struggle for millennial Republicans like myself. Almost daily I see rants targeted at Republicans, but I hardly ever see posts of Republicans defending themselves. I'm usually afraid to express my opinions about political things, but I’m speaking out about the 10 biggest struggles of being a Republican in this day and age.
When you tell somebody you’re a Republican, and they ask you if you know it’s 2015.
D'uh.
When people assume Republicans are just old white men.
Actually, I know many women and minorities that are Republicans, so no.
When people also assume you hate minorities and women’s rights.
That is actually the exact opposite. We support everyone being equal, not one above the other.
When somebody asks you if you’re going to vote for Donald Trump.
No.
When someone says you’re only a Republican because your parents are.
No again.
When you’re scrolling through social media and all you see is #FeeltheBern.
The GIF explains it all.
When you’re still scrolling through social media and all you see are anti-Republican rants.
These are a daily occurrence, usually over something that Donald Trump said. But just because one Republican thinks something, it does not mean we all do.
When your professor is a raging liberal so you keep your opinions to yourself.
Just trying to get an A.
When Democrats call Republicans homophobic and racist despite the fact that their party platform is that they are accepting and don’t judge.
When you meet someone who’s also a Republican.
It's rare but also awesome to find a Republican friend these days.
