OK, so I’ve been wondering, is there really an oversaturation of music artists in hip hop and rap? There is constantly criticism of those who aspire to be musicians in the hip hop and rap genre because they are not going to be able to separate themselves from millions of other artists who also want to rap or sing. But for me, I think that’s just part of the journey, finding your own sound and figuring out what defines you. If you are really as great of an artist as you think you are, then it should be easy to deviate from the paths of all these artists who typically sound the same and establish a loyal fan base who appreciates what you have to say. And this is definitely something that I am experiencing myself as a musician right now. So I find it very hard to believe someone when they say that there are too many rappers or too many of this and that to flourish as an artist. For those who have an understanding of the work that it takes to reach even a small amount recognition within their chosen industry, we know that everything takes time. If you keep working on your craft and improving on the weaker qualities of your sound, you will invent a unique personality in your music that people are bound to vibe with. Don’t believe me? Look at your favorite artists and how long it took them to reach stardom:

  • Kendrick Lamar had been rapping since 13, released multiple mixtapes, EPs, and one studio album before finally being recognized on a national scale at the age of 24.
  • French Montana released 10+ mixtapes in 2012 and was featured on plenty of other artists’ songs before he finally got his first major deal in 2014. He had been rapping for years before, too.
  • Young Thug spent a few years developing his style before he ended up earning his first deal. The key to him gaining his popularity was the fact that he had a group of producers and artists to work with, like PeeWee Longway and Metro Booming. Rich Homie Quan’s come-up was similar, so it makes sense that these two ended up working together on multiple projects.
  • Migos didn’t ad-lib their way to the top overnight. Just go look through their multiple mixtape releases before they collaborated with Drake on Versace. And oh yeah… What about him?
  • Drake. Who doesn’t listen to Drake these days? I assume you already know he was rapping while he was also filming Degrassi. Dude is making hundreds of thousands off of an album full of throwaway songs as we speak. Can’t do that overnight, it took the kid years to finally reach his signature style that we all know and love.

  • I’m not mentioning older rappers because in their time, there weren’t as many people trying to rap. It does seem like a lot of young artists are in the game right now. But we also need to start giving the new kids a chance. There is this stereotype that if you aren’t famous when you mention your music to someone, you’re probably horrible as a musician. While for some this is true, we all need to recognize that not everyone who is good at rapping, singing, or anything is going to be nationally recognized and revered for their music. We all had to start somewhere. There is no list of future rappers that is pre-written, we all make history ourselves whether we are the ones making music or the ones telling someone about all the new artists that we really fuck with. And for those who think there are too many rappers and singers, remember: Almost anyone can rap or sing. But not everyone can rap or sing remotely well. And that’s the beauty of finding new artists. Someone has to take Drake’s spot in the future. I mean… Why not someone on this campus?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
