My Dream Is To Be A Teacher And No, I Won't Give Up On It

I just spent weeks creating a 30-minute lesson plan. And no, I still don't regret it.

To Whom It May Concern,

I have had my heart set. I have been thinking about this forever. Why stop now?

To those who say, “You’ll never get a job as a teacher.” “You’re wasting your time!” Well, I think the only right thing to do is absolutely follow your dreams. I am willing to work for my dreams. If you have the desire to teach, or any other major where it may be hard to find a job down the road, NEVER give up.

For those who need a little insight on teaching, this poem might help.

To be a teacher,
That’s what I want to be.
To impart knowledge,
And enrich their minds;
Let them discover,
Aspects of life.
To share my principles,
My beliefs and way of thinking;
For as not to make the same mistake,
That I did in my life.
To teach them values,
That our forefathers taught us;
Love, Respect, Discipline,
And all that it governs.
Giving all I could give,
Exhausting all I know;
Giving them wisdom,
And making them more than I am.
And when the time comes that I retire,
They’ll be my greatest achievement;
My victory, my glory and my pride,
Lastly with a head up high I say: Mission Accomplished.
(James Callos Jordan)

As one embarks on student teaching or the program of teaching, whether the students are as young as 4 to 18, the idea of passion and love for the students doesn’t change. There will always be a need for educators and don’t let anyone tell you different.

To try and give up, you’re allowed.

To give up and not try, you’re dismissed.

The reality of it is, we are all adults. We reproduce. Who else is going to teach your kids?

I am a junior in an education program. I can honestly say, the classwork can be tedious. Sometimes there are multiple lesson plans due in one week. Sometimes, there's nothing at all. But every week I am in the classroom gaining experience.

Each semester gets harder than the next and before you know it, you're at graduation. It may seem like it is all going way too fast. But the hours of time put into lesson plans and teaching them in class will all be worth it. The motivation is hard to find. The students don't get certain topics, the students may not be having a good day, or simply you are too tired to even function.

But every day the teachers that I have observed so far have made it known that they put on a smile and try to teach whatever lesson the students need. If they need more time, additional practice, or whatever it may be.

Educators will always surround you, just remember: If you are the one being told to pick up another major, FORGET IT. We need more educators no matter what. And if you are the one saying that "being in a teaching program is so easy," I just spent weeks creating a 30-minute lesson plan.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
