To The Student Struggling To Find Purpose

As a college student, I've been asking myself a lot of questions, mostly about the future. Is this what I still want to major in? Should I minor? Which direction should I take with this degree? Will I find a job? Will I be able to support myself? What if I'm not passionate or happy pursuing this?

Do you see how the questions quickly escalate? They get deeper, broader, and cause more anxiety, doubt, and distress.

With each year and generation, students face more pressure, higher standards, and greater expectations. Even as a high school student, I remember being pressured into taking more advanced level classes in subjects that were not my forte. It's becoming harder to get into colleges. Certain career paths are pushed. Competition and stress are on the rise.

This is a lot, and it can definitely be discouraging. If you are struggling with the future and these pressures, I want to start off by saying that your performance does not define you or your worth and value.

Whether you are high school student or working towards a college degree, here is some advice when it comes to finding purpose and making decisions about the future:

1. Develop Self-Awareness

If you are dealing with inner conflict and doubt, you might need to engage in some self-searching and discovery. What is your personality? What are your strengths? What are your weaknesses? Ask friends and family about their perception of you, or take a credible, online personality test. Once you have a better understanding of yourself and your needs, it will be easier to find what works for you.

2. Channel Your Passion

To find your passion, it is important to remember who you are, what you stand for, and the things that set your soul on fire. I'm passionate about a lot of things, such as art, music, writing, health, learning, and helping people. All of these passions had a common denominator, or something in common. I decided to pursue a career in psychology, because I can channel these passions while also utilizing my personality strengths.

3. Follow Your Own Path

As cliche as it may sound, everyone is different. Just because your friend has a super smart STEM brain or your parents are successful in their field does not mean that you are the same way or should be pressured to follow the same path. You are gifted with a certain skillset and personality for a reason. If you are called to something and you work hard to pursue that calling, you will find a way. It might look a little different, but a path will be paved.

4. Remember That It's A Journey

Your path or road might have some curves, loops, and detours, and that is perfectly OK. It might take you longer than others to reach your goals or figure out what you want to do in life. People may judge you or discourage you, but you have a choice to let them drag you down.

Keep being you,

M

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
