If you want to make your eyes bleed, take a look at this recent tweet that went somewhat viral:
Let me make something perfectly clear.
This is not okay.
Even if it’s a joke.
It’s not okay.
This is not the kind of conversation that should be happening.
This is not the kind of thing that people should be tweeting.
I understand that there are only 140 characters in a tweet and sometimes you just have to summarize what you want to say. I fully give this girl the benefit of the doubt and assume that she obviously would not want someone to drop out of college for a reason like this.
In case you haven’t noticed, there has been a huge cultural change lately - especially regarding women. There are more opportunities for women to be CEOs, to be Principals, to be Senators and these are all amazing things and we should look up to these women.
But why does that mean that a woman who wants a life where she can stay at home and attend her child’s school activities is not worthy of having a college education?
While we have this cultural change of #bossladies we also have this era of bloggers and truth be told - most of them are working from home. They are dropping their kids off at school and then going home to work on their business that they started and can conveniently do everything in their own home office.
There are also women who feel led to a life where they truly ARE cleaning the house, doing laundry, even baking cupcakes. And yeah, maybe they’re friends with other ladies doing the same thing and go out and have lunch with them - because there are women like you who are generalizing them as uneducated and unimportant to society and obviously they aren't going to want to invite you.
But this is what really bothers me - the thought that because a woman wants a life like that means that she shouldn’t have a college degree.
Do you know how much debt the average American family owes a year?
$135,924
Let’s say this woman’s husband gets laid off and is struggling to find a job and they find themselves elbow deep in debt - which according to a recent study at least 54,000 people get laid off every day. Wouldn’t it be easier to handle that situation if she had a college degree?
And what about celebrities who go to college? Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were MILLIONAIRES by the time they were eighteen. They had no needs financially to go to college and yet they still did because continuing your education is good. Learning is good. Strengthening your mind is good.
It’s okay to want to be the most successful working person in the world just like it’s okay to want to be the mom who brings beautifully decorated cupcakes to school for their child’s birthday. Both are important for our society. Both are good goals. But this attack on women by other women because of the way they are choosing to live their life needs to stop.
Oh, and also - maybe jump on registering for classes earlier. It’s not their fault they signed up before you did.
