An Open Letter To My Big Sister

"Who is your biggest role model?" We get asked this question a lot when we are younger. Many people expect the same answers ,"my mom" or "my grandma." For me, it has always been my big sister, Samantha.

My sister and I did not have the most normal relationship growing up. We do not have the same mother and we did not grow up living in the same town. There is also a 7 year age gap between us. A few times every year my dad and I would go pick her up and bring her back to Wichita, where we live, and have to take her home as the weekend was over. We were not around each other very much so we did not have time to fight or argue like normal siblings you hear about. We cherished the moments we spent together, and if we did not it was probably because I was being a brat, but who knows?

My sister has been the most positive influence in my life, hands down. She is one of my biggest fans and number one supporters. I got to grow up watching her go through high school and college and whether she knows it or not, it has been a huge blessing for me. Everything that she has done that she might think of as a "mistake" in her life, has helped me see the right things to do. She has also let me live out my own mistakes. She helped me understand that you are not always going to date the right boy that makes dad happy and you are not always going to make the right decision when you forget to turn your headlights on and drive down the street at night, but these are the things that I am forever grateful for.

Now that we are older and I have had time to understand how much of an effect she has had on me, even though she is not around, I am so thankful that God chose us to be sisters, because I have no idea what I would do without her. Who else would I be able to go see on the weekends when I want to get away from the stresses of everyday life, or who would stop at 3 different places on the way home because we want french fries, pizza, and ice cream for dinner? These are the memories that I will never be able to replace.

Sammy, I love you to the moon and back. Thank you for being the best big sister that a girl could ever have. Thank you for blessing me with the cutest little curly headed niece ever. Thank you for being you and for being such a blessing in my life. I am forever grateful for you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
