An Open Letter To My Dog

Even though you don’t speak human, I feel like you understand me.

Bella,

We adopted you in 2008. You were a few weeks old. Dad did not expect you, but there you were, and you stole his heart. I love it when I hear, “Where’s my girl?” from my dad, even though it’s not for me, I’m glad it’s for you. I’m glad he accepted you and started loving you like you were one of his girls.

You are so spoiled. I think we spoil you way too much, but you deserve it. You’re such a good girl we can’t be mad at you. Even though you sometimes ‘GO’ anywhere if we don’t open the backyard door for you, that’s our fault, not yours. See spoiled.

Chihuahuas are known to be small and loud, but not you. You don’t have time to bark at the mailman. You look like a reindeer, with your long arms and legs. Your white fur chest is like you wearing a fur coat, fancy. Dad loves your white paws, you look like you’re wearing white socks, just like him!

Thank you for being there for me. Even though you don’t speak human, I feel like you understand me. You know when it’s time for lunch, when it’s time for a walk, when it’s time to go to bed, you’re just too smart for this world.

No matter how tired I am, I always make time to play with you. Going for walks is my favorite part of the day. We get our exercise but we also get to spend alone time together.

There are so many reasons why I love you. You are my best friend, my sister. Thank you for loving me when I feel unloved. I hope you know how blessed I am to have you in my life.

Love your sister, Sam.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
