Valentine's Day has passed and I can officially say that I am enjoying my discounted chocolate. Most people I know are single and loathe the holiday or are in a relationship and absolutely love it. I have always questioned the reasons why anyone would hate or love the day.
I guess one of the main reasons why so many individuals love the holiday is because it gives people an excuse to spend time with someone they really care about. I can understand that in a couple's life they may be too focused on other matters, and may need the holiday to reconnect with one another. The holiday may also be loved because of all the gifts and presents someone may receive. We live in a world where many of us are materialistic. I would be lying if I said that material objects don't make me happy. Valentine's Day is a day where many people can buy flowers, candy hearts, chocolates, and expensive gifts for others. Valentine's Day also is a day where many people can show their love for people they care about. This can be friends or members of their family. The holiday is not meant for only couples. People can have fun even if they are not in a relationship.
On the other hand, there are reasons why many people despise the holiday. The main reason I always think of is that "Valentine's Day is so stupid because it forces people to show love only one day a year." I somewhat agree and disagree with that statement. I agree because many companies make too much money on one holiday because it is dedicated to love, therefore, people automatically assume it is the only day to celebrate "love." While that may be true, I also disagree because even though Valentine's Day has become very commercialized and "pointless" as some say, the day still exists as a way of spending time with people they truly care about. I can see how some people may hate the holiday because if they are not in a relationship, they are forced to see all the couples have a great time. Even though that may be the case for some, people can still celebrate the day with their single friends or family.
Valentine's Day has always sparked some strong opinions within my friend groups, however, I am still deciding whether I hate or love the day. Personally, it has always been a day I didn't care for because it never really meant much to me. Valentine's Day is just another holiday and it will keep being celebrated or hated. I just celebrate after because I get chocolate for a cheaper price the very next day. Thank you Valentine's Day for satisfying my chocolate needs.
