An Open Letter To My Future Students

I am counting down the days until I meet you.

Dear future students,

First things first, I cannot wait to be your teacher. Second, it has been a long journey deciding to become an educator. My family has always told me that I should think about either becoming a teacher or a nurse; since I don’t like blood or needles, nursing was out for me.

Going into my senior year of high school, I wasn’t even sure then that my future would be teaching. It was not until I met my math teacher that year, Mr. Coad, that I was certain I wanted to teach. He is kind, hilarious, intelligent and passionate about being there for his students. Although I have never enjoyed math, I looked forward to going to his class everyday. Mr. Coad was somehow able to do what every educator strives for: getting students to care about the subject, while having such a positive impact on their lives. This man is my inspiration, and I hope to be like him one day for all of you.

Although I knew I wanted to be a teacher at this point, I still had to decide what grade I wanted to teach. Somehow, I immediately knew I wanted to be a middle childhood education major. Despite how many people feel that this is a difficult age group to teach, I was excited back then and still am today. Middle school students are at such a special and difficult age, and they need someone to be there for them. To be a middle school teacher, you need to do more than simply teach the content. These students need someone to support them, help them understand the world, and guide them in their studies. This is something I believe I can do for all of you, and I will work hard to fulfill that promise.

Earlier today I was given the opportunity to go to a fifth grade classroom and hours later, I am still smiling. Each student was so unique and added something so special to the class. The questions these students had about the world and about their studies amazed me. Everything the teacher and the students did during that class made me so certain that I had chosen the right career and age group to teach.

I do not expect it to be easy, and I do not expect it to always be fun. But I do know that I am thrilled to meet you all so soon, and I can’t wait for what the future will bring us.

Love,

Your future teacher

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
